The first film version of Richard Wright's now classic American tragedy stars the acclaimed author himself. Chicago, 1930. Bigger Thomas, a poor but proud young black teen, coming-of-age in the inner city, accidentally murders Mary Dalton, the reckless daughter of his wealthy white employers. Panic-stricken, Bigger hides the girl's body. But when his crime is found out, Chicago's most prominent white citizens rally like a lynch mob to see him punished to the letter of the law.
