Audience Reviews for Negotiator (K˘sh˘nin)
So I finally got Flixster to add this movie, the American title is Negotiator. This was a very simple but good movie from Takashi Miike, nothing like the movies many expect from him. Hard to use the word "normal" describing one of his films, but it is. But it also shows the diverse movies he can do, so if you want to see another side of Miike, I recommend at least watching it once.
Terrific 1st half, at least as far as knock-offs go, and then the second, where it explains basically the mystery behind the kidnapping turns into soap opera. Since it's also Takashi Miike it's still Miike directing a soap opera, but it's with mixed results. I grew tired of the usual long 5 minute without-cutaway takes (great in Gozu, but not here) and the resolution of the whole story felt just weird, and not in a good way. There's still considerable craft here, and it stands above most other thrillers of its ilk, it's just a loopy and melodramatic script that undoes it.
A very different way to go for Miike in this movie. It's all about the drama and unraveling the mystery of 9 separate people involved in two unrelated crimes. No one is really who they seem and the story presents all kinds of elements of love, revenge, and protecting one's family no matter what. The film was very clever and I was happy how the film was handled. Who is really good or bad you will just have to watch to find out...
