He goes so far as to compare its environment to that of an asylum, with the students viewed as inmates. Looking for every chance to challenge the school’s authority, he sees an opportunity when he discovers that a former student had rebelled against the same educators a few years before. That young man, Stanton (MIKE SHANNON), was institutionalized after being expelled from New Port South in his senior year. He has since escaped from the asylum. Inspired by Stanton’s actions, Maddox enlists a group of students -- Clip (KEVIN CHRISTY), Chris (WILL ESTES), and Amanda (MELISSA GEORGE) -- to revolt against their educators in a solemn attempt to change school policy and curriculum. Maddox begins distributing propaganda throughout the school and captures the entire student body. -- © 2001 Touchstone Pictures [More]

  • It's students versus faculty in this provocative thriller that entertains all the way to the surprise ending! A high school senior named Maddox has watched as his classmates' freedoms have been stripped away by a domineering faculty at his suburban Chicago school. Then, when he hears the story of John Stanton, a student who rebelled against the system and was institutionalized under suspicious circumstances, he decides it's time to act. Together with his best friends Clip and Chris, Maddox sets a revolt in motion in the name of Stanton. But as the facts of Stanton's case begin to unravel, and as Maddox becomes increasingly obsessed with his cause, his friends start to suspect there's more than meets the eye.

If the poster for New Port South had any truth to it, it would read "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing".

Cooper shows significant promise in his directorial debut. Let's hope he finds the funding to direct again but with better material next time.

A movie that feels like three hours of detention -- even though the film is only 97 minutes.
