Director Cui Zi'en (FEEDING BOYS, AYAYA) guides his cast through some complex romantic entanglements in NIGHT SCENE. Returning to familiar subject matter, Zi'en weaves his tale around Yangyang (Gao Yang), a young, sexually confused guy who discovers that his father is gay. Angry at the hidden life his dad has been concealing from him, Yangyang tracks down his father's lover and confronts him. But the emotions stirred up in Yangyang lead him to explore his own sexuality, and he soon hooks up with Haobin, a gay street hustler who keeps his occupation hidden from his new lover. But Yangyang's inevitably discovery of Haobin's shady after-dark occupation leads to further tears and recriminations. A bold, brave movie that tackles issues not often found in Chinese cinema, NIGHT SCENE is an impressive third feature film from Zi'en. [More]
