New Line Planning New Nightmare on Elm Street?

We've had a rebooted Halloween, there's a new Friday the 13th on the horizon, and Screen Gems has devoted itself to exhuming every available '80s horror flick in its vaults. Left out of all the fun -- until now -- has been New Line's Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.

According to a report at Bloody-Disgusting, however, that's about to change. There's been plenty of Nightmare talk for years, of course, but no one's been able to determine exactly what New Line was planning for the series -- everything from a prequel to a Freddy vs. Jason follow-up has been rumored. Well, here's the inside scoop: according to Bloody-Disgusting's source, "New Line is actively developing another Nightmare on Elm Street movie."

Just which movie, however, is still up in the air. From the article:

Everything you've heard before has been scrapped (prequel) and they're back at square one. Ideas are being thrown around without anything solid locked down.

If the report's source is on target, the next Nightmare-related movie probably won't be Freddy vs. Jason 2; as the article puts it, "as of right now, today, this very moment, there are no immediate plans" for a sequel. So what's next for Freddy? Which project would you choose...or do you even care about the stripe-sweatered boogeyman anymore?

they have to do a remake because a sequel would simply be straight to video. and honestly, why would you bring back Englund anyway...that makes little sense in terms of REdoing it if you have the same guy. i'm up for a redo...not a sequel. i'm soured on Englund anyway, the last flick i saw him in was 2001 maniacs and it was absolute horsesh3t. regardless though...if this has any chance of being successful they need a complete overhaul

seriously...Scream 4, i'd be shocked if craven isn't thinking it with all these remakes/redos/sequels coming out. i just watched Scream 1 again last night and d3mn...thats a frikkin great movie

Aren't the 80's a little too early to be remaking movies to start with? I mean the original cutting edge masterpiece of horror came out in '84, it's only 24 years old, and still holds up well. That being said though when it comes to horror films, they cost practically nothing to produce, and the return on them is so great, everyone almost always makes their money back, and that's why we see the re-makes and multiple sequels to these things...bottom line is its going to happen anyway regardless of what we think....

Horror is what makes movies? Comedy, drama, action, sci-fi...... there are a couple of other genres out there that are more important then horror. Horror is for people who are, shall we say, not as smart as the average human.

I'll point out my country isn't trillions of dollars in debt, have millions of children without health insurance or have hundreds of thousands of troops stuck in an endless war with no end in sight while piling up thousands of dead soldiers and tens of thousands of injured soldiers. If you don't like horror, why don't you post somewhere else? I won't even bother to explain that human beings have in their make-up biologically and in their societies, a strong reaction to being scared and some of its positive. Let's not denigrate an entire genre, b/c you personally have a distaste for it.

PS. I don't see a Nightmare re-make being any more successful than the Halloween re-make. I certainly don't see any sequel possibilites from the Halloween re-make. I say leave the successful horror flicks that can still create decent sequels (and possibly put an endcap to the franchise) alone, at least for 30 years. There's got to be some other original horror ideas out there or cross-over potentials before we do that.

A new darker Nigtmare on Elm Street may get the people afraid of Freddy again, Now these days people laugh at him for all of his stupid jokes and all that jazz.

A second Freddy vs. Jason, even with another character would overall be a mess, the first one was worth it and was good but why do we NEED to make another?

I'm all for another Elm Street but they better not screw it up even more than the series is already.

I can only imagine them releasing a contrived film with little or no quality ala FREDDY VS JASON or TEXAS CHAINSAW remake/sequel. New Line ****ed this series over before after three films; the final two minus NEW NIGHTMARE were direct to video at best. And now that horror is essentially dead, thanks to lack of imaginative talent and schlock like SAW, HOSTEL, HALLOWEEN2007 which perverted the genre by exploiting it into some twisted vouyeristic (?) porn. Its been a pant by numbers industry since the advent of SCREAM. I guess what Im getting at is, when is the last time a film actually scared you ? And not made you grossed out or laugh uncomfortably; but honestly scare you without music cues to leave lights on or not go to bed ? I can only think of two, both well over twenty years old: THE EXORCIST and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. So unless New Line can produce a true horror film; Id rather just leave this boogeyman in the closet.

Yes, you just have 80% of your population living on the border wishing they'd had any stones over the last 200 years to move 20 miles south. Stay up there with your wilderness adventure movies, and talk about snow, hockey and maple syrup ya hoser. America has contributed the lightbulb, harnassed electricity, the assembly line, the Personal computer, Airplanes and for all intents and purposes the Radio (Marconi stole the idea from Telsa) Canada has given us....Celine Dion and Bryan Adams. gratefuldawg, it really depends on what scares you PERSONALLY though. i've seen alot of friends be scared of movies and i dont jump at all. because its easy to see whats coming or simply because i'm not afraid of certain things. honestly, if they made a movie about country white people midgets set on a deserted farm haunted by rosie odonnell...i'd be scared out of my mind. while others would laugh, i'd seriously be scared.

with that said, the ONLY movie i've seen that scared me(not including when i was a kid) is Stigmata. when she's possessed...the voice just scares the sh3t out of me. no other movie i've seen since i was probably 15 has scared me. i laughed at the exorcist, halloween was average(the remake was horrible) and the first Friday the 13th was about the only OLDER movie that was somewhat scary.

canuck666...get your bible huggin' 2ss off a frikkin horror movie forum if you don't like it. you know what else is sick? parents taking kids to a HORROR movie called Passion of the Christ. tell me THAT wasn't torture p3rn. and if you don't like this country...do a Amityville horror...and..."Get....out..."

Im not sure of what everyone thinks or not, but I'm pretty psyched about this. I didn't grow up in the 80's, and never got to witness the older horror films in theaters and to be able to see the remakes at least with a modern twist will be awesome. Freddy is always a character that I thought was great because of the story, and they could change the movie from the original by having more backstory to the Freddy character.
