Ningen gokaku (License to Live) (1999)
Both the strengths and weaknesses of the ties between family are examined in this drama from Japan. In Ningen Gokaku/License To Live, Yutaka (Hidetoshi Nishijima) awakens after spending ten years in a coma, following a serious auto accident. He discovers to his shock he no longer has a family to go home to -- his parents have split up, with his mother missing and both his father and sister out of the country. Fujimori (Koji Yakusho), a friend of the family who works out of the house where Yutaka and his family once lived, takes him in, but Yutaka doesn't feel comfortable in this new and unfamiliar world. After Yutaka's family reunites, he begins to pursue an eccentric dream of opening a dude ranch at the family's shabby home, while Fujimori fosters his own ambitions of creating a for-hire fishing pond. Ningen Gokaku/License To Live was premiered at the 1999 Berlin Film Festival. … More
