Michael Clayton (90%)

hot fuzz anyone? i have to admit, living in a small market most of these movies came and went before i really had a chance to see them, but i would agree with most of this.... but seriously, hot fuzz? where is it? and i liked 300.

Um, 2007 was a pretty lousy year for movies. I don't think I'm alone in this opinion. Oscar season was almost a complete bust. But the year was good for one thing: comedies. Hot Fuzz, Ratatouille, Knocked Up, Superbad, & Juno are some of the best in recent memory. Hell, you could probably add Planet Terror to that list as well.

Throw out "300," "Superbad," and "Knocked Up," and include "Rescue Dawn," "The Host," and "The Bourne Ultimatum," and you'll have a list that seems more relevant and respectable and less like a ****ing advertising board for the latest trends in teen and young adult viewing.

Gotta say 3:10 to Yuma was a surprise for me and American Gangster was just great but two films had me smiling more than I have in some time...Ratatouille and Grindhouse, earning them year end kudos. Hot Fuzz was something special and The Host was amazing. Lots of great docs to watch this year but I think ...This Film is Not Yet Rated might be my fave but there were many I enjoyed.

But No Country for Old Men is my top film of the year.

Haven't seen There Will Be Blood or Juno and Rescue Dawn was supposed to be here TODAY! (Netflix)

ps Superbad was better than Knocked Up in my opinion and Hills Have Eyes 2 is the worst film of the year.

You probably missed the huge slate of October releases, I know I did, which was crap(3:10 to Yuma*, In the Valley of Elah, Eastern Promises*, Into the Wild, and The Assasination of Jesse James). American Gangster did disappoint, but No Country, Zodiac, and Rescue Dawn were great. And of course the comedies(Knocked Up, Superbad, Simpsons Movies, Blades of Glory, Hot Fuzz). Haven't seen There Will Be Blood, Juno, Atonement, Sweeney, or Diving Belle and The Firefly.

Of the films I've seen on this list, I recommended them all on my Journal and the Forums. Some truly fine choices by the RT Gang. As far as the year's best are concerned, I would have personally added "The Savages," "The Lookout," "A Mighty Heart," and "Bridge to Terabithia." Honorable mention would also go to "The Simpsons Movie," "Charlie Wilson's War," "Across the Universe," and "Live Free or Die Hard," among others.

Every film year this decade seems to have provided instant classics in a particular genre. 2007 was clearly the benchmark for quality in recent comedy.

I really do think 2007 was an excellent year for movies, definitely the best in a long while (for me). I hope more people outside of NY/LA/cities with arthouse theaters get to see truly great films like Diving Bell and the Butterfly, There Will Be Blood, La Vie En Rose, Control, etc...in the very least, everything will be available on DVD so there's really no excuse. :)

As for the great films we left out -- some of you mentioned Grindhouse, King of Kong, The Lookout -- well, these here are just a few selections from our editors, and if you check out everyone's blog for their full lists I think you'll find quite a bit more of those solid 2007 films, in variation from list to list.

While 300 would not be on my top ten list this year, if you did have to include a big dumb action movie, it was probably the best of the year. Better than any of the summer sequels or Transformers, to me at least.
