SuprMan writes: on Dec 28 2007 05:07 PM I have to have seen it to count it so 'There Will Be Blood,' isn't released until Wednesday. I think that is the only movie that could still make the list. "Eastern Promises,' and 'Sweeney Todd', will make a lot of lists but I wouldn't recommend either. 'Stardust' was fun but like 'Enchanted,' kept pulling back. 1,2,3 and 6 will probably garner best picture nods. 1. Charlie Wilson's War - Very intelligent. Hilarious as hell if you know '80 politics and geopolitics. The movie assumes you'll get the references. Despite the non-stop laughs this movie has a lot to say about U.S. foreign policy and how we got to where we are today. 2. Michael Clayton - Filled with sharp performances. No one's hands are clean and everyone knows it which generates a desperation that makes it believable. 3. American Gangster - Minor flaws can't mar the successor to, and improvement on 'Scarface.' The rise and fall here is of a multidimensional character, that, flaws and all is as "American" as they come. 4. 300 - Visually enthralling in a way that 'A Scanner Darkly' and 'Beowolf' so aren't, this testosterone extravaganza makes no apologies for creating a male war hero fantasy. The women are flawless and the injuries definitely look painful- you really want to jump in and pick up a sword. 5. The Bourne Ultimatum - This movie is great even if you haven't seen the other two. The Bourne series started great and keeps getting better. Visually arresting with great locations this would not be out of place in the Best Picture category. But the Academy would sniff at recognizing the genre. 6. No Country for Old Men - Well paced, well shot, well acted but leaves more questions than it even raises. This could almost be a fantasy in Tommy Lee Jones' head. Feels like 'Blood Simple' but not as good a movie. 7. Hairspray - This surprised me. Despite wondering why John Travolta, this movie, like 300, knows exactly what it is and makes no apologies in either the story, songs, or enthusiastic and wide open performances. (Reply to this) |

BowieSwimmer writes: on Dec 29 2007 08:37 AM Necessary additions [in no particular order & just off the top of my head]: Gone Baby Gone, Sweeney Todd, Sunshine Overrated: Rescue Dawn, Breach, 3:10 to Yuma, Bourne, American Gangster [the last three are excellent films, but not as stellar as a lot of people seem to say they are]. I still need to see There Will Be Blood [I think I might actually go tonight, if I can find a legit theatre nearby that's showing it] Atonement is my #1 film of the year, with NCFOM in at a close #2, and Juno in third [normally, I barf at poignant comedies, especially ones that deal with teen pregnancy. but honestly, you just can't resist the power of Diablo Cody, Ellen Page, and Michael Cera] Also, SuprMan mentioned how NCFOM leaves more questions how it raises...did you get the meaning/signifigance of the ending [I won't spoil anything]? The themes of the book were tied perfectly into the film, and the Coens transfered those essential, dark Cormac McCarthy themes over to the big screen with profound results. (Reply to this) |

the_shadow writes: on Dec 29 2007 12:25 PM looking at your individual lists, particularly the first few, there seems to be a surprising lack of love of Ratatouille (maybe you guys just don't like to spell it out), and Gone Baby Gone. But at least No Country is getting the attention it deserves. It is the coolest movie since Pulp Fiction... dare I say it's even cooler :O (Reply to this) |

arendr writes: on Dec 29 2007 02:37 PM I saw There Will Be Blood last night. Wow...there's really no point in nominating any other actors. Just give Danny Boy the statue right now. And the movie is fantastic. (Reply to this) |

Joe Utichi writes: on Dec 29 2007 09:47 PM I did my list by the UK release window so there was only a little crossover with the US. Jen did a great job putting the list together and even included Hallam Foe which I'm very grateful for (according to IMDb it'll be called Mister Foe when it releases in the US in March) but, you know what, I wish I'd have said something about Gone Baby Gone. I had to go to LA to see it (or rather, I went to LA so made a point of seeing it) because they pushed the release back in the UK, and I'm glad I did finally get a chance to watch it. It's absolutely one of this year's best. It's probably a lot more mainstream than what most would consider the year's best to be, a lot more accessible to audiences, but dammit that's a great thing and Affleck's talents behind the camera are further solidified by it. Dude should let his brother have the front-of-camera time from now on and stick to writing and directing. A Pearl Harbor here and a J.Lo there make us forget this cat won an Oscar for writing Good Will Hunting. (Reply to this) |

metalsister writes: on Dec 30 2007 08:24 AM If overrated, violent, depressing movies without definitive conclusions are what it takes for a film to be considered "Oscar-worthy" then it looks like I'll be going to bed early this year. "No Country" had no ending and "Atonement" was 100% darkness without a single sliver of light. Thank God for the freshness of "Juno", the scope of "Black Book", and the sharp dialogue of "Charlie Wilson's War". The only other flicks that left an impression in an otherwise sad year for film were: "American Gangster", "3:10 To Yuma", "Michael Clayton", and "Gone Baby Gone". (Reply to this) |

chicubs1 writes: on Dec 30 2007 08:48 AM I have a question for you guys, why is it in your mind and the minds of critics movies that considered the best of the year have to be thought provocing or have to be deep, why cant the best movie just be the most entertaining? I mean that is the point of movies, to ENTERTAIN. I like the occasional thinking movie but hell most of the time i want to escape reality and just have fun that is the reason why i love action and horror movies. I mean you have to have a dull life to not like those movies or comedies, and when i say comedies i do not mean those holier than thou comedies like Juno. (Reply to this) |

BatsInTheBelfry writes: on Dec 30 2007 10:23 AM Chicubs, that's exactly what I do. I just happen to be entertained by No Country, There Will Be Blood, etc. I'm sure others on here are doing the same thing. Your opinion isn't wrong, and neither is ours. You and I actually have two movies in common in our top ten. (Reply to this) |

chicubs1 writes: on Dec 30 2007 10:35 AM See the thing is that i am a student, and i work a lot so when i go see a movie i really do not want to think a lot but relax and be entertained thus the reason why i like entertaining movies. (Reply to this) |
