Read all the comments posted and I'm in total agreement with Metal Sister. Many fine movies have been downgraded in my eyes due to unsatisfactory endings. Either you see them coming an hour from the end or they are so obscure and inconclusive that you groan in frustration when the credits roll (top award here obviously to No Country). Its almost like the directors don't know how to end a previously good movie and just stop filming. Many good movies this year but no great ones.

The Departed, Blood Diamond and Babel from 2006 would all rate above 2007's offerings.
The best of the bunch for mine would be Charlie Wilson's War, (Phillip S-Hoffman is outstanding), American Gangster (Denzel carries every movie he's in), Fracture and Bourne Ultimatum. Honourable mentions to Gone Baby Gone and Eastern Promises (another to have a disappointing ending).

"The Lives of Others" is by far the best pic of the year followed by "Eastern Promises" and "No Country for Old Men". Daniel Day Lewis gives the best performance in modern cinema in "There Will Be Blood" but the movie seems lacking over all - AND WHAT ABOUT THAT SOUNDTRACK! I am surprised that more reviewers don't have more to say about the annoying, intrusive, mismatched soundtrack to Blood. Crazy man. Just crazy

I missed way more of these then I should have, but fortunately the local theater has this deal every year where you get to watch all 5 best picture noms, and get unlimited soda and popcorn, all for 50 bucks. Awesome way to spend the day.

Wow, that's a pretty amazing deal. I dunno if I could do a 10-hour marathon in a theater, though.

Great to see all the different opinions on RT. Speaking for myself and my own list, there were a lot of movies that looked spectacular (Persepolis, TWWB, Control, The Orphanage, and several more) that I wanted to see but didn't get a chance to, which is why they probably weren't on my list. At the time I was asked for my top movies, I hadn't yet watched Eastern Promises, Atonement, Sweeney Todd, 3:10 to Yuma, and Rescue Dawn, all of which I have seen since then. So these lists are by no means comprehensive, and as someone else mentioned, keep in mind these are all just opinions, intended to generate discussion... which they seem to be doing.

thetrubastard: "
Throw out "300," "Superbad," and "Knocked Up," and include "Rescue Dawn," "The Host," and "The Bourne Ultimatum," and you'll have a list that seems more relevant and respectable and less like a ****ing advertising board for the latest trends in teen and young adult viewing."

That is the most ridiculous thing i have read in a while. So you're saying that "The Bourne Ultimatum" wasn't a commercialized movie? Hmmmm.... And how is this an advertising board when half of these movies were limited releases? Your argument holds no water!

Where the heck is Eastern Promises in this list? Never has a movie about the mob captivated me so much for me to not even realize that not one gunshot was fired! Seriously, insane. The story, to, goes beyond the mold of most mob movie's stories of revenge.

300? no.
Bourne, Rescue Dawn, or King Of Kong should've made the list instead of it.

Wow..some pretty amazing lists here. I think a ten picture list is just too damn small and limiting though. I agree with those who think this was an excellent year for films, because I can easily come up with over 20 that I just can't ignore. So here we go ...

At number 1) No Country for Old Men. Because if I put myself in Josh Brolin's and Tommy lee Jones' character's shoes, I would be abolutely terrified out of my f'n skull if I were them. The villain in No Country makes Hannible lecter look tame in comparison.

2) 3:10 to Yuma ( a great western for 2007, Bale will get a nomination)
3) Assasination of Jesse James ( again, this was another gorgeous looking western)
4) Eastern Promises ( as someone mentioned, a perfect mob story with absolutely NO bullets fired)
5) Rescue Dawn ( Christian Bale seems to turn almost every film to gold he's associated with)
6) Pan's labyrinth (spa) ( I'm purely convinced Del Torro can direct anything, and make it gold)
7) The Host (Jap) ( my jaw dropped when I saw this..wow)
8) There will be Blood ( Lewis' finest acting since Gangs of New York)
9) Perfume ( rarely does a film have you truely sympathizing with an antagonist like this film...amazing)
10) Sunshine ( I also think 28 weeks later was good, but this was my pick from Danny Boyle)
11) Bourne Ultimatum ( clearly goes against the grain of the lack luster sequels trend, brilliant trilogy closer)
12) Stardust ( I was surprised at how funny this was, great story too, never read the Neil Gaiman comic, but now I want to)
13) Transformers ( I think Bay pulled this off better than people give him credit for)
14) 300 ( pure vien-pumping fanboy food, loved it!)
15) Sweeney Todd ( Enjoyed this greatly! oddly, suffice to say I'm not a musical fan..who knew?)
16) Across the Universe ( An inventive story the beatles would be proud of)
17) Angel.A (fra) ( A simple french story with some of the best B/W cinematography since Shindler's list, I love all of Luc besson's stuff)
18) Planet Terror ( The machette trailer had me howling, I cried it was so funny)
19) Hostel 2 ( Enjoyed the frightening tale of the first, this one expanded on it)
20) Deathproof ( Problebly the truest revenge flick that stands alone, in an age were we tend look back at the old great revenge flicks)

Some honorable mentions..Hot Fuzz, only because the last hour was funnier than the first and could have killed it for me if this wasn't the case. Mr. Brooks.. One of Costner's better roles, thought it was excellent, but the ending had me scratching my head. And finally, I wanted to say something about a tiny horror film called 30 Days of Night. It scared me, because again, I put myself in Josh Hartnett's character's shoes and thought this would be terrifying in a small secluded town up in Alaska. Again it was the ending that could have been less generic. Good comic adapted horror flick though..

yeah, I think 2007 was a great movie year.

I still haven't spoken to a single person that liked the 300, then I don't know many 13 year olds. Grindhouse and LiveFree/DieHard were much better adrenalin movies.

Knocked-up??? dumb, chick flick. Superbad...way better...and funnier. I've had more conversations about this movie than any other. One that cracked me up was some of the Hawaii kids being denied entrance on Mainland Clubs because of the McLovin' I.D.

The latest movies that I've seen that work on your list are Juno and No Country For Old Men.

Atonement was an extraordinary movie, and I applaud you for including it. A lot of people think it's a big epic love story, but it's really not. The story is gut-wrenchingly beautiful, and the performances, direction and music are all made to perfection. And the ending of the film left me completely devestated. Definately one of the best films of the year.
