In his feature film directorial debut, Joel Gallen spoofs the ever-popular teen genre. The students of John Hughes High School live the plot lines of numerous teen flicks, including SHE'S ALL THAT, AMERICAN PIE, TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, VARSITY BLUES, and SIXTEEN CANDLES, to name just a few. The most popular boy, Jake Wyler (Chris Evans) has bet his friends that he can make Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh)--the poor, smart girl from the wrong side of the tracks--prom queen. Meanwhile, her little brother is in pursuit of the most beautiful girl he's ever seen when he's not getting into trouble with his geeky friends. Of course, a teen movie wouldn't be complete without a mean-spirited cheerleading captain, a lovestruck best friend, and a foreign exchange student, all of whom have prominent roles in the film. Throw in a few guest appearances from familiar faces from some of the best-known teen movies of the 1980s, along with remakes of songs from the same films--and even some word-for-word dialogue--and you have an amusing walk down memory lane for anyone who has a soft spot for THE BREAKFAST CLUB, CRUEL INTENTIONS, and PRETTY IN PINK. Reviews for Not Another Teen Movie
A big, fat, juicy spitball lobbed, with mostly dead-on aim, at the teen-smarm clichés that have accumulated like so much earwax over the last three years.
It's stupid, it's obvious, it's scatological and violent -- but it made me laugh and I'm giving it thumbs up, God help me.
More often than not you'll be groaning from painful recognition rather than actually laughing.
The makers of Not Another Teen Movie should be embarrassed that, in parodying She's All That, they copied most of the plot and then made a movie that bogs down in the same places as the original.
This parody of teen comedies is just teen comedy by the numbers, for those who can only count to three.
Many of the movie's targets are just too big and too obvious to elicit more than a smile of recognition, and the movie quickly degenerates into little more than a game of spot the (generally unfunny) reference for fans of the teen genre.
The jokes are overlong and lean heavily on the most obvious and most raunchy.
Along with this venial sin of simple redundancy, the picture commits the less pardonable crime of commercial irrationality.
Crass, misogynistic, homophobic and racist, it lacks finesse, originality and humor.
A clever satire that's layered like a breakfast club sandwich with sly in-jokes, sight gags, gross-out scenes, and, of course, requisite bathroom humor.
Not Another Teen Movie is a happy, nasty and frequently hilarious assault on 20 years' worth of youth pictures.
Teen is nothing more than the timelessly crude throwaway project it wants to be.
It was not good to see yet still more wretched excess in the jokes about characters being sprayed with vast quantities of excrement.
For the most part NATM requires passing acquaintance with the source material.
Not only is it consistently clever, but it has respect for many of the movies it lampoons.
