Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant forge memorable chemistry in this charmer about two very different people--William, an unassuming bookstore owner in London's Notting Hill section, and Anna, a Hollywood actress--who, against the odds, fall in love. After Anna wanders into William's shop while filming on location in London, the two share an instant attraction and find themselves attempting to forge a normal relationship despite Anna's megawatt star power. Screenwriter Richard Curtis (FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL) has crafted a traditional romantic comedy that is surprisingly frank in its depiction of the lives of the rich and famous and the price they pay for success. Clearly, Roberts can play the version of herself with which you're familiar and happy. Where that leaves you on the real-unreal continuum is a little less clear.

Grant's sly, boyish, infallibly halting charm makes him, if not the new Cary Grant, unbeatably the new David Niven.

Notting Hill cynically merges Hollywood gloss and smarminess with an overwrought but highly exportable English taste for quirk.

[Notting Hill] has buckets to spare of that rarest screen commodity -- genuine, engaging charm -- plus a cast and production values that fully deliver when the chips are down.

Notting Hill is whimsical and light, fresh and quirky. Quite engaging and quietly appealing.

The movie is very funny and that humor truly overcomes most of the quibbles I have with the screenplay.

No smoky Darjeeling or perfumey Earl Grey here, just the plain black brew, hot and light and sweet.

We should be pleased enough to see a star-vehicle romantic comedy which actually does contain star quality, romance and comedy.
