I find it frightening so many reviewers said they couldn't figure out the plot. Really? Even after it was over? It was a darn good movie but but a terribly overly complex plot was not one of its flaws. They probably need to stick to reviewing romantic comedies and leave science fiction, fantasy, mystery, or anything with a plot where something might not be as it seems, to reviewers that can count to twenty with their shoes on.
It's a fun movie. I won't deny that it stole blatantly from other, better science fiction flicks... but you can really get caught up in Oblivion's story.
This was not particularly good sci-fi. It failed to present any meaningful or thought provoking moral or ethical questions. So in the absence of that the only thing to think about is the sequence of events that occurred. Which would have been fine if the story was tight enough to withstand the scrutiny.
I'm not sure I agree that most reviews are focusing on the action parts. I feel it's mostly because they felt the plot was thin and the characters weren't very convincing.
I gave the movie 4/5 tars. I quite enjoyed it: the gorgeous scenery, the slower, more deliberate pace [some sci-fi movies these days jump right into things], the futuristic technology, the post-apocalyptic setting, the 'one man' against huge odds aspect, and the sweet score from M83. :D
People find it easy to hate Tom Cruise. I tend to ignore the man, and concentrate on his work. Whatever the role, Tom is convincing. It's why he keeps getting work, despite the haters. say what you like, but he can act.
I cannot stand Scientology, but I think Tom's never had a normal life so its easy for him to get lost in fantasy land. He is a great actor! Top 25 Movie Stars of all time.
I agree Wilma and Andrew. His understated, measured intensity is a welcome change to his cocky, "Top Gun,Days of Thunder" days. His recent "Jack Reacher" taps a similar vein and worth a watch for the same reason. I could care less about his religion, or personal beliefs...but judge him on his acting abilities. After "Born On The Fourth of July," I will always appreciate him and sing his praises.
