"Ocean's Thirteen" Gets Leading Lady And Start Date
Warner Bros. has announced the addition of Ellen Barkin to the cast of threequel "Ocean's Thirteen," adding that production on the summer 2007 pic will start on July 21.
Director Steven Soderbergh will helm the third installment of the "Ocean's Eleven" heist flicks, with the original eleven thieves -- George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Shaobo Qin, Carl Reiner, Elliott Gould and Eddie Jemison -- all set to return. Andy Garcia is also set to reprise his role as Danny Ocean's nemesis, Terry Benedict, although "Thirteen" will not see the return of "Ocean's" ladies Julia Roberts or Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Barkin will assume leading lady duty, according to Variety, although the plot has yet to be revealed. Producer Jerry Weintraub disclosed only that Barkin's character "gets closely involved with Damon's character."
Variety also notes that, unlike the previous two installments, "Ocean's Thirteen" will not be shot on location (as "Eleven" and "Twelve" utilized Las Vegas and Europe, respectively) but will instead use five WB soundstages in Burbank, California, which are to include a specially constructed, fully operational casino.
Confirmation of the July start date comes as sweet relief to "Ocean's" fans, as recent rumors have suggested that the hectic schedules of integral stars Clooney and Pitt, as well as the ever-busy Soderbergh, might prevent the project from getting off the ground.
Soderbergh, who has begun filming the Che Guevara biopic "Guerrilla," is also in the post-production stage on "The Good German," (which also stars Clooney) anad has at least eight other upcoming producing gigs on his plate. Clooney is currently shooting another pic, "Michael Clayton," and is coming off a decidedly active 2005. Meanwhile, Pitt has just completed "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" and "Babel," and is signed on for two more pics within the next year -- in addition to the birth of his first child with Angelina Jolie this summer.

cowsfan writes: on Mar 27 2006 07:21 PM The second one was dull. Uninspired. Why is Soderbergh wasting his talents on this stuff. He's one of the best American directors around and is capable of doing great movies that make you think as well as entertaining ones like 'Ocean's Eleven'. I think he should do another fun genre pic but no more of these sequels. Looking forward to 'The Good German' (Reply to this) |

taran72 writes: on Mar 28 2006 08:53 AM I agree - no Roberts means it has potential. Soderbergh must be a heck of a salesman to get all these guys back together again. The catering must be AWESOME. (Reply to this) |

puablo writes: on Mar 28 2006 11:27 AM Ugh. This sounds like a bad idea. I loved the first, and I liked the second (even though I thought THAT one was a bad idea too). So it's quite plausible they can make a third one, I mean it will just be another heist movie with the same entertaining characters. It can certainly work, and not be awful... but it really doesn't sound like a good idea. (Reply to this) |

Flim Springfield writes: on Mar 28 2006 05:40 PM The "Ocean's" movies are just popcorn flicks to make money to bankroll smaller films like "Good Night and Good Luck". So while I'm not eager to see an "Ocean's Thirteen", I'm all for them making it. (Reply to this) |

Jen Yamato writes: on Mar 28 2006 06:56 PM Ellen...Barkin? Am I the only one wondering what Ellen Barkin's character's involvement will be with the plot in Ocean's Thirteen? Not to age discriminate, but Ellen Barkin + Matt Damon?? Sexy, kinda... It's not necessarily a romantic association, but one can only speculate... (Reply to this) |

gbwillner writes: on Mar 29 2006 12:29 PM My prediction.... WORST MOVIE EVER.... unless MI3 beats it to the title first. WHY, GOD, Why do these horrid ideas make it to celluloid? Maybe in this movie we'll get to see Julia Roberts play a hooker and a hooker play herself. PLOT SUMMARY (spoilers): A heist is planned, a bunch of unrelated crap happens, they make fun of "the rookie", and in the end they pull it off, just as you think they are getting caught, and there is no explanation for anything and it makes absolutely no sense. villain78 writes: on Mar 29 2006 01:28 PM I'm all for it. If it bankrolls their smaller movies, then bring it on. Popcorn flicks are always going to be stupid anyway, at least Soderbergh sneaks in a French New Wave sensibility to his popcorn flicks. (Reply to this) |
