"On Valentine's Day" is the prequel to "1918," the first installment of playwright Horton Foote's trilogy about small town Texas life adapted for the screen. Set in Wharton, Texas, "On Valentine's Day" focuses on newlyweds Elizabeth and Horace Robedaux -- characters based on the playwright's own mother and father. The lovers eloped on Valentine's Day, 1917, but their marriage faced obstacles from the start: Elizabeth's wealthy parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn, cut off relations with their daughter because they opposed the union. (Horace's humble origins didn't suit them.) The Vaughns do not even relent when the financially pressed couple moves to a boarding house in Wharton in an attempt to save money. But after suffering her family's coldness for some time, Elizabeth determines that, somehow, she must try to make peace with her loved ones once again. [More]
