Sy Parrish (Robin Williams), who makes this observation, adversely leads a lonely life, operating a photo lab in a SavMart department store. He escapes his dreary reality through the family photos of Nancy Yorkin (Connie Nielsen) and her family. His admiration of the Yorkins becomes an obsession, as he fashions himself as Uncle Sy to little Jake (Dylan Smith). Sy's judgment becomes impaired by his unhealthy interest, causing him to lose his job of 11 years. As his final day approaches, Sy develops photographs revealing an indiscretion on the part of Mr. Yorkin (Michael Vartan). The unstable Sy now develops a disturbing, calculated plan to instill family values to the Yorkin clan. Much of ONE HOUR PHOTO takes place inside a department store similar to a Wal-Mart, bordered in an icy blue. This cold atmosphere creates a solitary framework for the disturbed photo developer Sy Parrish, played with a melancholic detachment by Williams, working here against type. Director Mark Romanek (STATIC) has created a thriller with little violence. Instead, it is permeated with an uncomfortable fear emanating from its damaged protagonist. [More]

One Hour Photo is a masterpiece. Mark Romanek joins the list of top-notch directors who can deliver visual kicks, but have more than that in mind.

Williams ... gives a performance that is riveting in its recessiveness and, as a consequence, truly, deeply scary.

What makes this picture particularly chilling is that Sy Parrish, who harbors violent thoughts, could easily be someone like you or me or the photo guy in the local store.

While the film's stalker subplot is rote, Williams (typically calling attention to himself) nonetheless makes for a fascinating, albeit second-rate sex-pervert.

As the needy photo clerk, Robin Williams turns in a complex portrait of a man who wants to be helpful, while barely concealing a fissure in his view of everyday life.

It’s a very real film that nearly everyone will realise they have a connection to in one-way or another.

No matter how creatively saturated in color One Hour Photo is, the craft exists to play up lurid sensationalism and middle-class home invasion jitters.

Not since American Beauty has a film so effectively skewered the American Dream.

Though nicely shot, with a few pleasant photographic details thrown in, and containing a deranged lead role, One Hour Photo doesn't follow through on the complexities it tries so hard to achieve.

An absorbing and unsettling psychological drama.
