All is not as it seems in the picture-perfect town of Tree Hill. Within the span of this one-hour pilot, the setting of this popular WB series reveals itself to be a place fraught with buried pasts and hidden agendas. When Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) end up on the same varsity basketball team, they quickly become rivals on and off the court. The real source of this tension goes much deeper than anyone can imagine, as both boys are hiding the burdensome knowledge that they half-brothers. The sons of the conniving and treacherous Dan Scott (who left Lucas's mother Karen while she was pregnant with Lucas), the boys have always lived entirely separate lives--until now. This episode introduces several more characters into the tangled web that is Tree Hill, including: sultry troublemaker Brooke (Sophia Bush), and Nathan's girlfriend Peyton (Hilarie Burton), whose chemistry with Lucas forms yet another rift between the two estranged brothers. While ONE TREE HILL bears many resemblances to earlier small-town high school soap operas like DAWSON'S CREEK, it focuses more energy on its adult characters than teen dramas before it. By developing its parental figures as fully as its adolescent stars, the series succeeds in creating a cohesive world in which all character's lives intersect regardless of age. [More]
