Responsibility is catching up with Varon Thomas (Kenny Young). As his roommate is finally moving out, Varon is poised to marry the girl of his dreams (Saadiqa Muhammad). With a promotion opportunity at his job, Varon's future has never looked brighter. Only one week before his wedding date, Varon is contacted and informed that an unidentified past lover has contracted the AIDS virus. Without telling friends or family, he undergoes an HIV test. Searching for this mysterious ex-lover, stress mounts and anxiety boils under the surface as Varon tries to go about his daily routine and prepare for his wedding night. Director Carl Seaton and lead actor Kenny Young collaborated on this script about responsibility and the difficulties of getting out of the ghetto. Working against the clock to fight disease in the projects, the film contains similar themes to GRIDLOCK'D, but on a more intimate level. ONE WEEK was a success on the festival circuit winning numerous awards, including the Audience Choice Award at the Chicago Film Festival. [More]

Reviews for One Week
It seems a satire more than a serious exploration, each purported plot twist telegraphed with a hilarious leaden clumsiness.
Although, at times, the sluggish action of One Week seems to creep by in real time, the film is kept believable by honest, low-key performances and a script that sounds like the way real people talk.
Deserves to be given time for the word to get out on just how good it is.
The film's important message is delivered without excessive sentimentality or being overly preachy.
Mixing comedy and romance with such a grave subject is a dicey proposition, but Seaton gets the balance just right.
Hits its target and does it the old-fashioned way, not with didacticism but with a solid story and, for the most part, well-crafted, authentic characters that deepen over the course of the film, giving genuine emotional power to the film's resolutions.
Mitigates its gimmicky predictability and de rigueur uplift by resisting the lazy sentimentality of most AIDS dramas.
