Adapted from his own play, writer Larry Ketron tells the story of succeeding generations of people in a small town, from the 1960s to the 1990s, who repeat the troubled relationships of their parents. Reece McHenry (Sam Shepard) has opened a clothing store and falls for seamstress Carol Fritzsimmons (Diane Keaton) while his wife is in the hospital in a coma. As time marches on we meet his son Tom (Robert Patrick) and Carol's daughter Katherine (Diane Lane), who also become romantically involved. The difficulties of relationships is examined through the men's reluctance to make decisions and the women's difficulties in establishing their independence in the face of their partner's indifference.
