Reece McHenry (Sam Shepard) has opened a clothing store and falls for seamstress Carol Fritzsimmons (Diane Keaton) while his wife is in the hospital in a coma. As time marches on we meet his son Tom (Robert Patrick) and Carol's daughter Katherine (Diane Lane), who also become romantically involved. The difficulties of relationships is examined through the men's reluctance to make decisions and the women's difficulties in establishing their independence in the face of their partner's indifference.
