After Tommaso Scalia loses his job, he murders the man who fired him as well as the employee who has taken his place. He then rapes and kills his wife. Police soon capture Scalia and he is put on trial. Although it seems obvious that the accused is guilty of the crime, juror Vito Di Francesco -- who happens to be a judge, by profession -- becomes obsessed with finding out just what would push a man to commit such brutal deeds. In the process, he becomes convinced that it would be wrong to vote in favor of the death penalty, which has just come back in vogue in Italy. As he starts snooping around, Vito faces political pressure to stop asking questions. Will he cave in to the intimidation or continue his quest for justice? [More]
