EMILY, an articulate, emotionally mature, young NY woman, and her spontaneous friend LIZA, take an ill-fated weekend trip to Memphis, TN. Those familiar with the slapdash cinematography in Joe Swanberg's own movies might be surprised to discover the filmmaker's restrained, occasionally shimmering lenswork in Kentucker Audley's Open Five.
The dubious comforts of 'coolness' -- the Audley character's emotional flatness, created, like metamorphic rock, by the pressures of self-awareness, self-loathing and self-regard -- may be the movie's true subject.
