Handsome 25-year-old César (Eduardo Noriega) has it all--a successful career, expensive cars, a swank bachelor's pad, and an endless string of beautiful and willing women. Unfortunately, he can't get rid of his latest conquest, Nuria (Najwa Nimri) soon enough. When she crashes his birthday party, César uses his best friend Pelayo's stunningly attractive girlfriend, Sofia (Penélope Cruz), as a means to her. The next morning, Nuria is waiting in her car outside his apartment and manages to coax him into the vehicle. The next thing César knows, he's wearing a mask to conceal a horrible disfiguration while being interrogated in a prison held on a murder charge. Alejandro Amenábar's thriller distorts both the viewer's and César's perception of reality with a series of mind-bending plot twists, ensuring that this intriguing Spanish production will keep you guessing until its final moments. Even if the script (written by the director and Mateo Gil) and direction are patchy, the obsessive theme is gripping.

The visually stunning product is no less absorbing and haunting, not to mention surprisingly moving.

The original of Vanilla Sky -- more subtle, but not as much fun.

See this far superior thriller instead of the lousy remake "Vanilla Sky."

Amenábar's virtuoso style and connection to the youth audience, both of which are resented by the Spanish film establishment, make him a plausible model outside Spain for a European cinema that bridges the gap between arthouse and mainstream.

Alejandro Amenabar's psychothriller is a dark dish Cruise and Crowe later turned to plain Vanilla.

It's a puzzling story that dips in and out of reality, but one that is thought provoking and allows us to contemplate to live the dream not the nightmare.

There is no problem accepting star Eduardo Noriega, an unknown on these shores, saying and doing things that look ridiculous when performed by Cruise.
