Critics Consensus: The Other Guys Cops Big Laughs

Summary

This week at the movies, Will Ferrell reunites with director Adam McKay (Step Brothers, Talladega Nights) to get absurd on the buddy cop comedy (The Other Guys, co-starring Mark Wahlberg); street dancing busts a move into the third dimension (Step Up 3D); and the Internet becomes a haven for porn entrepreneurs (Middle Men). What do the critics have to say? With the exception of Step Brothers (mixed at 55%), the McKay-Ferrell comedies tend to be viewed among the best of the star's movies, and The Other Guys is following suit. Critics say the police comedy, which pairs Ferrell's bookkeeping detective with Wahlberg's hot-tempered cop, is a refreshingly solid comedy in a summer that's been largely devoid of them. I think i'll pass on this weeks films. Can't wait till next week for Scott Pilgrim. Will Ferrill is a johnny-one-note actor, he plays the same character in all his films. The only film I liked him in was the film of the Broadway show, The Producers because he had to play a specific character as it was written, and he did a great job.

I must respectfully disagree with the notion that WF plays the same character in *all* his films. Elf, Stranger Than Fiction, Ricky Bobby, Ron Burgundy, Wedding Crashers, Step Brothers... maybe some others?

Although I give credit for it FILMED IN 3D, but the problem is that most of the time it's used to reach out in the audience, "Oh, look my hand is reaching out," and I heard it's worth checking within the last 10 minutes since that's when it's used well.

3D is a fad, a tool used to force people to pay extra on a movie for money grubbing studios. Besides, a lot of people are not able to see the 3D in a movie if they're blind in one eye or have bad eyesight.

Although 3D in theaters is good, it's stupid for a Home theater, too much on a 3D television, glasses costing 100-200 dollars a pair, 3D Blu-rays double the price of regular Blu-rays. Now that fad will die faster than HD-DVD.

I must say I think they used the 3D well in Despicable Me, like they didn focus solely on the 3D, and more on the story, but added the 3D subetly.

To all the Will Ferrill haters out there...you do not get onto SNL if you are not talented. It's not Will Ferrill that is "not funny"...it's the scripts, it's the film choices. Even in the worst films he's been in recently there are damn funny scenes. I'm not saying i'd pay current ticket prices to see his films...but he is worth look on DVD. Elf...classic...Stepbrothers had some great schtick. Do yourself a favor...go to Funny or Die.com and search "the landlord"...classic Ferrill.

I don't know if I'll ever trust the critics with an Adam McKay/Will Ferrell movie. They consistently receive good reviews and always suck.

I know this is out of leftfield, but go to College Humor, they have a video poking fun at Inception that is absolutely hilarious and is sort of true.

Cool.

In some cases I think 3D is fantastic. Avatar in IMAX 3D was incredible beyond belief. Clash of the Titans on the other hand...

All in all, I like 3D. Films like Clash can still be seen in standard format...if at all.

Does not every movie offered in 3D still have as many (if not more) screens showing the 2D version? I'd say that's hardly forcing anybody to do anything.

Normally I'm not a big fan of 3D. But then I saw "Avatar", and I'm happy to have this new technology available for a movie such as this.

Now I'm not into the dance movie genre, but methinks part of Step Up's allure (to those into this kind of thing) is the spectacle of the dancing. I hear the last 15 minutes of "Step Up 3D" is visually stunning. If done with some imagination, I could totally see how this technology would greatly enhance a movie such as this.

The James Cameron produced/Del Toro directed "At the Mountains of Madness" will probably be another 3D winner.

Other movies that are, shall we say, on the rotten end of the Tomatometer, decide to release a version with shoddy 3D tacked on, why would anybody care? Can't you just go see the 2D version? What's the problem?

I agree man, when I heard the dilaogue in the trailer its terrible. But, the 3D could be pretty cool so I'm checking it out.

Comedy, more than most other forms of entertainment, is highly subjective.

I think Ferrell is a funny dude in his movies. (In interviews not so much, he tries a bit too hard.) Will Ferrell fans will probably like "The Other Guys." Will Ferrell non-fans probably will not.

Dance movies are not for everyone (and not me!). Dance fans will probably like the visually enhanced "Step Up 3D." Non-dance-fans probably will need to smoke alot of reefers beforehand, as indicated by a previous post.

To the people dis'ing "The Other Guys" that don't like WF, and to the people dis'ing "Step Up 3D" that don't like dance movies...

Well d'uh!

All other forms of art are subjective.

There is not yet a law people must like movies that are considere classics (AKAKAKAKAK movies a bunch of people decided everybody should like).

I would rather see how many nails I can hammer into my nose than subject myself to that crap. I would rather spend my hard earned money buying the Schumacher Batman movies than go to see that in 3D. I would rather be forced to play through the Iron Man 2 video game than sit through that.

In short, there is no way I will ever see Step Up 3D, in any dimensions.
