As the Academy found before awarding it seven Oscars, it is easy to be seduced by the lush cinematography and Barry's score. More difficult to tolerate is the slushy love story between Streep and Redford.
Odd, I not only found it tolerable, I found it beautifully detached.

I agree. It was a poor choice by the Academy. The cinematography and Barry's score were impeccable. However, I felt that the acting of the love story by Streep and Redford as well as Klaus Maria Brandauers acting earlier on in the film was actually quite good. The ultimate issue was Pollack's flawed direction and Luedtke's appalling slow and drawn out screenplay.
