Out Of Hand (2006)

A provocative coming-of-age drama with domination and homoerotic themes. The film, by first-time director Eva Urthaler, was an official selection of the 2006 Philadelphia International Film Festival and the 2006 NewFest (New York) and was nominated for the Golden Leopard Prize at the 2005 Locarno International Film Festival.

Containing somewhat surprising subject matter for a female director, OUT OF HAND deals with the brutal kidnapping of an adult female by two teenaged boys, who struggle with what to do with their prey once they have immobilized her in an abandoned factory. The film explores the razor-thin line between adolescence and adulthood and how the quest for power fuels sexuality and vice versa.

All three actors have won awards for their chilling performances in the film. Elisabetta Rocchetti (Sonja) was named Best European Actress by the National Syndicate of Italian Cinematographic Journalists. Sergej Moya (Sebastian) won the Best Actor award at the Madrid Mostoles Film Festival. Ludwig Trepte (Paul) won the Best Young Actor award at the Max Ophuls Film Festival where director Urthaler won the Max Ophuls award.

In the story, Sebastian and Paul are two teenaged troublemakers who spend their time drinking, stealing and beating people up. It's the thrill, the sense of testing their limits... and the wolf-like nature deep inside that attracts them to each other. From the outset, Sebastian emerges as the dominant figure in the pair, because he always wants to go one step further than Paul. One day they abduct 30-year-old convenience-store clerk Sonja and drag her back to their hangout in an abandoned factory. But now, what should they do with her? Paul becomes more distant with Sebastian as he starts to feel attracted to Sonja, trying to help her as much as possible. While Sebastian, not admitting even to himself that he has fallen in love with Paul, feels hurt and jealous... and becomes capable of anything.
