Ofelia's smock is swiped from Alice, her faun from Narnia, and her magic book from Harry Potter, Del Toro sets her fairytale apart with its unrelenting gore and misery.
Ofilia's mock is wiped from Alice? yes, because the director aimed to make a grown up version of Alice in wonderland. her faun from Narnia? no, her faun is know as the ancient character Pan, who if you had done any research or had a brain, you would know that his character stayed true to the ancient mythology in which he was first introduced. what Del toro did was combine the best of three worlds, without stealing anything at all and making a fantastic movie at the same time.
I don't agree with the critic either. I don't think the director stole anything from any other movies, not that there's anything wrong with that. But I think what he meant with "her faun from Narnia" is that the director intended to use Pan as a way to rip off Narnia. I think the critic knows.
Holy ****, you watched that entire movie and all you got was it was "stolen"? I don't think you actually did see this film because I don't believe any critic could be that stupid.
Wow just wow take this criticism off of it. Have you ever heard of an homage. It is when Guillermo was trying to invoke some classic fairy tale emotions in a completely original plot. GET RID OF THIS CRITICISM. Or find something real to complain about. If you can't find something then guess what there is nothing to complain about in this amazing movie.

That is literally one of the dumbest crits I have ever heard in my life. Where do you think all those movies/ books got their ideas from? From other movies/ books. freak...
Were you paying attention at all? And there is NO WAY you could make the assumption that her smock, book, and the faun were stolen fromm various movies, magic books and faun folklore have been around for centries, and lots of people wore smocks in that time. Maybe you should actually watch the movie rather than try to be different.
I seriously think some critics write bad reviews just because they get bored. There's no other reason she would give this a rotten and recommend Cirque de freak: The Vampire's Assistant.
Amy, you found the film depressing and therefore gave it a bad review? Your review says more about you than it does the film. You obviously are unfamiliar with the Spanish Civil War. FYI it was not a pleasant time for Spain. You are also comparing an adult ghost story to the younger fantasy films Harry Potter and Narnia, and to the Disney version of Alice. Apples and oranges, baby. PL is a masterpiece on every level. Sorry you missed it.
Pan's Labyrinth is actually the complete opposite of Alice In Wonderland. If you didn't get that then you weren't really paying attention.
Let's see here.......Alice is a normal girl who goes into a fantasy land and has adventures before returning to her home. Ofelia's life and experiences are quite the opposite. The home she strives to get back home to is not the war torn Spain that she lives in.
In terms of what makes a movie original this is a fresher item on the menu than most stuff out there. Perhaps Amy you're better off watching Superhero Sequel 6 or Animated Success 5, or Horror Remake 3.
Clearly you missed the point of this movie. Damn......even people who miss the point still liked it. Sorry if you expected a fantasy film.

Poor Amy, getting all this crap while clearly she hasn't seen the movie and has obviously just watched the trailer. I feel so sorry for her. Then again, Amy's salvation is not far: in the corner shop down the road: get the bloody dvd for ten bucks , see the movie (sober please, not in some agitated state that clouds your fair judgement!) and rewrite the review. This is a beautiful film on so many accounts that it is doing it injustice writing about it as a response to such a pathetic review.

Harry Potter stole his magic book from Tolkien and Tolkien from Anglo-Saxon Lore.
Write something worthwhile you hack. This movie is amazing.
