Although it follows a narrative and has a traditional plot structure, the film has a documentary feeling and uses many non-actors. It centers on a summer camp for autistic children in upstate New York. Matt (Matt Wolf) is a young New York City man who is searching for his purpose in life. One day on the subway he helps an autistic teenager who has suddenly fainted. Matt notices the guy's t-shirt, which is from the summer camp upstate. Then he finds an ad in the newspaper recruiting counselors for the camp. He has found his calling. Deep in the woods under a beautiful canopy of tall, leafy trees, Matt claims a bunk bed in a wood cabin with his group of autistic campers. Soon he has a non-judgmental understanding autism and through some challenging trial and error sessions, he develops a kind, gentle way of communicating with his campers. Taking a special interest in a 12-year-old girl, Jessica (Jessica Fuchs), who loves fairy tales, Matt seeks new ways to share her secret languages, codes, and above all, talents. Unique camera work that uses a variety of media--16mm color film, 35mm, super 8, miniDV, VHS, computer animation, and Endoscopic medical video--gives the film a independent experimental feeling that links directly into the plot. The world inhabited by the autistic children is presented as an intellectual, inquisitive, imaginative place, and the plot takes its own twists and turns which keep viewers fascinated with its eclectic storyline. This film was included in the 31st New Directors/New Films 2002 series presented by The Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Department of Film and Media of The Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
