Box Office Guru Wrapup: Paranormal Activity 2 Scares Up The Top Spot
Moviegoers were in the mood for a good scare as the supernatural thriller Paranormal Activity 2 topped the North American box office beating out high expectations and generated the biggest opening ever for a horror film in the Halloween month of October. Paramount captured the top two spots as its other fall sequel Jackass 3D fell sharply from its opening last weekend but still kept bringing in the cash with a strong second place finish. The studio's dynamic duo accounted for half of all ticket sales for the Top 20. Clint Eastwood's Hereafter enjoyed a moderate debut in fourth place as it went nationwide while most holdovers remained solid with declines of less than 35%.

Critics Consensus: Paranormal Activity 2 Is A Solid, Scary Follow-up
This week at the movies, we've got spooky spectres (Paranormal Activity 2, starring Katie Featherston) and supernatural seekers (Hereafter, starring Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard). What do the critics have to say? Upon its release, Paranormal Activity became something of a cult phenomenon - and the press was almost as intrigued by its budget-to-gross ratio as its lo-fi chills. Now, Paranormal Actrivity 2 is hitting theaters, and though it's barely been screened for critics, those who have seen it say it's a worthy - and very creepy -- follow-up. As a director, Clint Eastwood deserves plenty of credit for refusing to play it safe in his august years. However, that doesn't mean he's always at the top of his game, and unfortunately, critics say the multi-stranded afterlife meditation Hereafter is an intriguing but ultimately murky misfire.

Total Recall: Directors Who Started in Horror
Paranormal Activity made all kinds of money last year -- and it also launched the career of director Oren Peli, who used its $193 million worldwide gross as a gateway to projects like the upcoming Area 51. The jury is still out on Mr. Peli's career, but with Paranormal Activity 2 opening this week, we got to thinking about some of the other directors who got their start in horror, and it's a pretty impressive list. Though it isn't the most critically respected genre on the block, horror has often acted as a breeding ground for scary levels of Hollywood talent, and the seven directors profiled in this week's Total Recall are proof!

Oren Peli Talks Paranormal Activity 2
Oren Peli may not be willing to discuss "Area 51," but he's more than happy to discuss the budding "Paranormal Activity" franchise, and whether he thinks it has "Saw"-like long-term prospects.
