Maybe you need to be a parent to like this, because I thought it was lifeless.

Middle-manager Gil Buckman struggles to reconcile his ambitions at work with his loyalty to his family, particularly to his troubled son, Kevin. His divorced sister Helen has a sullen and withdrawn son and a sexually active teenage daughter. Gil's other sister, Susan, is a schoolteacher married to an ambitious yuppie determined to make a genius of their 3-year-old daughter. Their long-lost brother, the irresponsible Larry, has always been daddy's favorite and returns home with an illegitimate son named Cool. [More]

Reviews for Parenthood
Encourages us to ponder the awesome, crazy, powerful, and zany vocation of parenting.
It's a shock, and a welcome one, to see Steve Martin cast against type as a doting dad. Martin's nippy wit continually lifts this movie above the swamp of sentiment.
Director Ron Howard combines this multi-generational suburban soap almost effortlessly, considering the number of parents or would be parents we're expected to care about.
Parenthood is so nice and so fun that you just want to put aside concerns about its manipulation and its sanitized version of kids’ struggles. If you can do that, then this feel-good effort will work for you.
The performances are all wonderful, each actor having received some sort of acting plum and each giving it his all. Director Ron Howard is very good at comedy, and his timing is expert throughout the film.
Punchy entertainment for the open-minded family, the kind that realizes Home Sweet Home is -- well, an interesting idea.
A mosaic that views parenthood from many different angles and approaches and at times even comes near to restoring something that has been missing from film: some powerful drama.
A veritable diaper bag of laughs, it serves best as a sensitive guy's guide to fatherhood.
It's the best kind of comedy, where we recognize the truth of what's happening even while we're smiling, and where we eventually acknowledge that there is a truth in comedy that serious drama never can quite reach.
Most films are advised not to include too many featured parts lest none be adequately developed, but director Ron Howard is one of the few who can and does bring this off.
