Adapted from Pete Dexter's National Book Award-winning novel, this drama, set in the South during the late 1940s, stars Dennis Hopper as the title character, a racist shopkeeper who indifferently murders a 12-year-old black girl and then is shocked when he is actually brought up on charges for the crime.

Good but not great work by Dennis Hopper and Ed Harris. They try but the script does not provide them with enough to work with.
