No fat women," complains Parisian doctor Michel des Assantes (Michel Piccoli), as he stares into a virtual reality viewer and sits back in a chair, while a naked woman busily moves her head up and down in his lap. Spanish director Luis García Berlanga may have been eighty years old when he filmed PARIS-TIMBUKTU, but he remains as irreverent as ever. The unfortunate Des Assantes remains unsatisfied and, instantly, decides to give up everything. He is foiled when he attempts suicide from a balcony. So instead, he abandons his patients, his nurse, and his wife, climbs onto his bicycle, and starts cycling--to Timbuktu. Peddling his bike up a mountainous road, the doctor grabs the back of a truck. The truck goes round a sharp bend, and there is an accident. Des Assantes is taken into town by a funeral director. When they arrive, to the director's disgust, Des Assantes has dirtied the inside of a coffin. But fortunately, he has arrived in Calabuch--the town Berlanga created in his 1956 film of the same name--only now it is even more deranged than it was then. The good doctor becomes a bemused observer of, and sometimes participant in, this anarchic society. [More]
