Consensus: Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy take competition to a romantic-comic highpoint in this elegantly directed sports comedy by George Cukor.

With exceptionally witty dialogue (the Kanin/Gordon script got an Academy Award nomination), PAT AND MIKE was tailor made for its two stars, presenting a picture of sexual politics far ahead of its time. The film tells the story of the unlikely professional and romantic relationship between a classy female golfer and a street smart sports promoter. Pat Pemberton (Katharine Hepburn) is a physical education teacher who, entering a golf tournament, is approached by Mike Conovan (Spencer Tracy), a sports promoter and manager. Impressed by her game, he convinces her to sign a pro contract to compete in various sporting competitions. Now it is Mike's task to get Pat into professional shape. Hepburn did all of her own golfing in the finished film. Appearing in the movie as themselves were some of the most celebrated sportswomen of the era, including golfer Babe Didriksen Zaharias and tennis star "Gorgeous" Gussie Moran. [More]

Original comedy, with a rich look at women's sports - and gender roles.

Tracy is given some choice lines in the script and makes much of them in an easy, throwaway style that lifts the comedy punch.

One of the better Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn comedies -- not so much for the screenplay by Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon, which lacks the bite and sophistication of Adam's Rib, as for the relaxed and graceful interplay of the stars.

The film doesn't have much plot but the dialogue is bright, and the roles tailor-made for stars Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Hepburn demonstrates with physical strength what she proved in Adam's Rib with intellect, that women can be equal to men

There are far too many shots featuring real-life sports stars, but the sparring leads, and Ray's dim boxer, work superbly together under Cukor's deceptively effortless, always elegant direction.

Let's not be too analytic about the likelihood of the yarn or the tightness of the script Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin have written for this romp.

Tracy and Hepburn were so opposite in personal and professional style that their joyous compatibility on screen and off remains a source of wonder and delight.
