Consensus: George C. Scott's sympathetic, unflinching portrayal of the titular general in this sprawling epic is as definitive as any performance in the history of American biopics.

Patton (George C. Scott) who wrote poetry, fired pistols at strafing fighter planes, and loved America with a lofty and historical zeal. Tracing his personal rivalries with such generals as Rommel and Montgomery, his problematic treatment of his own men, and his nearly runaway contempt for diplomacy, the film triumphs as an enduring portrait of a complex and larger-than-life figure. PATTON was recipient of 10 Academy Award Nominations and winner of eight, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor--Scott, Best (Adapted) Screenplay--Francis Ford Coppola/Edmund H. North. A bio-epic on the order of Lawrence of Arabia, Patton is a smart, even-handed, fully realized historical film. [Blu-Ray]

War is hell, and Patton is one hell of a war picture, perhaps one of the most remarkable of its type ever made.

Scott appears not to act, but to fully inhabit his role, from his profanity spewing down to the swagger of his walk.

George C. Scott is terrific as General George S. Patton in this blend of intersting biopic and bland war film.

As written by Coppola and directed by Shaffner, Patton bears an ambiguous message, attempting to please both right-wing and left-wing viewers, letting each type of audience see the character, splendidly played by Scott, in its own way.

The film lays bare the roots of Patton's lust for power in his willingess to sacrifice everything to his vaunting ego, a trait which is mirrored in George C Scott's superb performance.

George Patton was born (at least once) for these big-screen dimensions. By the end of the movie you may hate the half-crazed son of a b!tch, but you can't not admire him.
