Box Office Guru Wrapup: Paul Blart Segways Ahead of the Competition
Summary
This weekend the North American box office was on fire once again as four new releases all scored muscular debuts helping to drive the marketplace to the biggest January weekend in history as ticket buyers flooded the multiplexes over a record-shattering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday frame. The Kevin James comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop surged ahead of expectations to easily win the session while the R-rated films My Bloody Valentine 3D and Notorious also generated stellar numbers. Kidpic Hotel for Dogs debuted to some nice figures as well joining its fellow newcomers in the top five. All four new films opened to more than $20M each over the extended four-day Friday-to-Monday period. Back to Article

jokerboy1991 writes: on Jan 19 2009 09:57 PM I saw Notorious and Defiance this weekend. I was actually surprised by Notorious and I liked it. I am not a hip hop fan but I loved the sound track, Jamal Woolard was very good, and he had a strong supporting cast. I do think it was a little cliche though, I felt they gave Biggie look a little too good with the ending where he makes amends, and I felt the Tupac and Biggie rivalry didn't feel realistic in the movie and Tupac was underused. I also liked Defiance but I was a little disappointed. I thought it was messy and had a lot of undeveloped ideas, I thought Daniel Craig and Jaimie Bell weren't developed very well, but I thought the movie was shot really well and I thought Liev Schreiber was pretty bad @ss. I would give them both a 7.5/10. Did anyone see My Bloody Valentine? I heard it is kind of fun in 3D, and I am still contemplating whether to go see it this week, (Reply to this) |

ledawg1138 writes: on Jan 19 2009 10:15 PM An okay week in film. But considering the fact that it's January, this week is IMMORTAL! I'd give "Notorious" a rental. (Reply to this) |

Ashron writes: on Jan 20 2009 08:33 AM In reply to this comment (#2267990) My Bloody Valentine is a lot of fun. It's an above average slasher film with some amazing 3D effects. Digital 3D is a far cry above the old blue/green glasses day. I'd recommend it. (Reply to this) |

Gimy writes: on Jan 20 2009 12:17 PM saw my bloody valentine, basically what you'd expect. if you've seen Friday/halloween/scream blah blah blah...you've already seen this one. but its still cool to be in 3d. if it wasn't for the 3d? simply a rental...but because it is...i'd say check it out (Reply to this) |

tomwaitsjr writes: on Jan 20 2009 02:59 PM Upon watching Marley and Me, near the end of the film the audience seemed a little glum, so I tried to cheer them up by laughing as hard as possible. They liked my laughter so much, I got a free ticket for another film if I would leave, having already done my duty. I bring this up, because Hotel for Dogs doesn't have the funny points of Marley and Me. You would think at least one of the little dogs would have been run over by a steamroller, but, nah, too pedestrian. (Reply to this) |

RE4P3R writes: on Jan 20 2009 03:15 PM Dammit, I wasn't able to see Defiance this weekend. My girlfriend had me watch "Valentine" instead, which was actually pretty good. I will see Notorious this friday, and hopefully Defiance as well. BTW, Fox Searchlight is hitting it real good these days. I never expected Slumdog Millionaire to reach $44M, nor The Wrestler to see such impressive figures. Hopefully they'll both stay that way when they get into wide release. (Reply to this) |

jokerboy1991 writes: on Jan 20 2009 05:04 PM In reply to this comment (#2269193) lol yeah I find it funny that FOX searchlight's movies are making more the 20th Century Fox movies, but then again all 20th Century's FOX movies sucked this year (except Australia). (Reply to this) |
