The acting should please everyone -- including Academy voters.

Based on a best-selling novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde and boasting the star power of two Oscar winners and a young nominee--Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, and Haley Joel Osment--PAY IT FORWARD spins a heartwarming yarn about an 11-year-old boy who comes up with an utopian idea as a project for school. History teacher Eugene Simenot (Spacey) offers the same ongoing extra-credit assignment he has proffered every year: Come up with an idea that will change the world. However, he expects nothing more from his students than halfhearted efforts that fall far shy of their mark. Simenot is therefore unprepared for precocious, irrepressible Trevor McKinney (played with wide-eyed wonder by Osment), who conjures up a stunning scheme. Trevor suggests the concept that every person who benefits from someone else's good deed should "pay it forward," instead of paying it back, and in turn offer favors to three other people. The first guinea pig for Trevor's experiment is his overworked, imperfect mom (Helen Hunt) for whom he tries to find a boyfriend. Director Mimi Leder, best known for such powerful thrillers as DEEP IMPACT, imbues the solid script of PAY IT FORWARD with a more grandiose aura. However, it is the movie's triumvirate of heralded stars--Spacey, Hunt, and Osment--that propels this compelling yarn. [More]

Reviews for Pay It Forward
Gutsy when it's not glossy, Pay It Forward is an affirming experience.
Ironic, isn't it, that a film about human decency takes place in Vegas?
Has all the elements of a satisfying movie except knowing when to stop. The rest is good enough, however, that it will do.
Good acting combined with the audience's desire to see good done is enough to warrant a conservative recommendation for Pay It Forward.
Optimistic, yet painfully honest, Pay it Forward is an excellent film for those who look for hope amidst the world's seemingly overwhelming bad news.
Acting from the three leads is solid, and director Mimi Leder manages to make their problems meaningful, despite the heavy we-can-change- the-world message.
The movie has a realistic sense of people's failings ... and it recognizes how hard it is to turn a life around.
"Pay It Forward" elicits more emotion than it deserves. Still, shedding a tear or two on account of the film is not an unreasonable request.
I figured this movie was going to be a little sappy and it turned out to be a lot sappy, but I forgave it all the same. Why? Moving performances and an overwhelmingly earnest quality that dares you to be cynical.
Hollywood feel-goodism at its best (or worst, depending on your Patch Adams tolerance quotient).
Hunt is effective as a single mom stressed by work, poverty and guilt. Spacey inhabits Simonet's lonely persona.
Spacey and Osment can wrench a few tears out of me anytime they want. Being led by the nose was never so pleasant.
This inspiring and imaginative film speaks directly to the greatest social problem and character disorder of our times — incivility.
We're carried through Pay It Forward by the boy's emotional development, his concern for people and his innate goodness and growing courage.
even if you don't buy the idea... it's still quite possible to enjoy the movie as a love story involving two badly damaged souls.
