Sadly, this is a truly excellent story that is told with exceptionally poor ability.

Based on a best-selling novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde and boasting the star power of two Oscar winners and a young nominee--Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, and Haley Joel Osment--PAY IT FORWARD spins a heartwarming yarn about an 11-year-old boy who comes up with an utopian idea as a project for school. History teacher Eugene Simenot (Spacey) offers the same ongoing extra-credit assignment he has proffered every year: Come up with an idea that will change the world. However, he expects nothing more from his students than halfhearted efforts that fall far shy of their mark. Simenot is therefore unprepared for precocious, irrepressible Trevor McKinney (played with wide-eyed wonder by Osment), who conjures up a stunning scheme. Trevor suggests the concept that every person who benefits from someone else's good deed should "pay it forward," instead of paying it back, and in turn offer favors to three other people. The first guinea pig for Trevor's experiment is his overworked, imperfect mom (Helen Hunt) for whom he tries to find a boyfriend. Director Mimi Leder, best known for such powerful thrillers as DEEP IMPACT, imbues the solid script of PAY IT FORWARD with a more grandiose aura. However, it is the movie's triumvirate of heralded stars--Spacey, Hunt, and Osment--that propels this compelling yarn. [More]

Reviews for Pay It Forward
Heavy-handed plot designing and telegraphing makes the film more tedious than rousing.
With Oscar recognition under their belts, the cast turns in uniformly lazy performances.
I figured this movie was going to be a little sappy and it turned out to be a lot sappy, but I forgave it all the same. Why? Moving performances and an overwhelmingly earnest quality that dares you to be cynical.
Has cute, amusing moments and is good-looking for a Vegas picture. Still, it's a squish.
Hollywood feel-goodism at its best (or worst, depending on your Patch Adams tolerance quotient).
Like a smart but lazy student trying to get through school on the strength of his or her personality rather than good study habits, it fails to live up to its promise.
An already-flawed motion picture that could have added up to so much more than it ultimately does.
Hunt is effective as a single mom stressed by work, poverty and guilt. Spacey inhabits Simonet's lonely persona.
The movie suffers from Mimi Leder's ham-handed direction, a script that takes the novel's disparate subplots and ties them into a too-tidy bow, and a climactic visual shamelessly ripped-off from Field of Dreams.
Spacey and Osment can wrench a few tears out of me anytime they want. Being led by the nose was never so pleasant.
Wants so badly for us to feel something -- inspired, teary, shocked -- that it leaves us merely numb.
Those who enjoy good performances, this might be worth a look, but remember, you will probably be disappointed with the film itself.
Hard-hearted critic that I am, I even found tears welling up near the end. But it's dishonest in its execution, and a tad dull after a promising beginning.
This inspiring and imaginative film speaks directly to the greatest social problem and character disorder of our times — incivility.
