Despite being full of Oscar-winning talent, this is still just a better-dressed, drawn-out episode of Touched by an Angel.

Based on a best-selling novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde and boasting the star power of two Oscar winners and a young nominee--Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, and Haley Joel Osment--PAY IT FORWARD spins a heartwarming yarn about an 11-year-old boy who comes up with an utopian idea as a project for school. History teacher Eugene Simenot (Spacey) offers the same ongoing extra-credit assignment he has proffered every year: Come up with an idea that will change the world. However, he expects nothing more from his students than halfhearted efforts that fall far shy of their mark. Simenot is therefore unprepared for precocious, irrepressible Trevor McKinney (played with wide-eyed wonder by Osment), who conjures up a stunning scheme. Trevor suggests the concept that every person who benefits from someone else's good deed should "pay it forward," instead of paying it back, and in turn offer favors to three other people. The first guinea pig for Trevor's experiment is his overworked, imperfect mom (Helen Hunt) for whom he tries to find a boyfriend. Director Mimi Leder, best known for such powerful thrillers as DEEP IMPACT, imbues the solid script of PAY IT FORWARD with a more grandiose aura. However, it is the movie's triumvirate of heralded stars--Spacey, Hunt, and Osment--that propels this compelling yarn. [More]

Reviews for Pay It Forward
The film boxes itself into a simplistic turn of phrase that grows quite annoying as time passes.
Hunt and Spacey have zero onscreen chemistry, and their extravagantly praised performances seem built on the classic Hollywood wisdom that you can't go wrong letting yourself look really awful.
Not as good as it wants to be because its trajectory is so obvious from the get-go.
It's a bit like the class showoff, raising its hand to answer every question. And like the class showoff, it's admirable, but there's something about it that makes you roll your eyes.
A cheaply manipulative film of constructed sentimentality that left me feeling angry at how it tried to jerk my emotions around.
An excellent film that should be a finalist for the top ten lists of many critics come year's end.
Despite the concerted efforts of its Oscar pedigree cast to keep it real, Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and impressive young Haley Joel Osment unfortunately find themselves smothered by the schmaltz.
As it stands now, Pay It Forward winds up making a very good case for never going out of your way to help anybody.
Director Mimi Leder becomes such a manipulatively mawkish emotional puppeteer that it feels as if she's tossing tear gas grenades into the audience.
