Welcome to my mind. My name is John Cadigan, and I'm an artist with schizophrenia. People Say I'm Crazy is my documentary about the world inside my head. It's a chaotic world filled with paranoia, creativity, fear and desire. A world in which I'm struggling every day, trying to know what is real and what is not. Ten years ago, after my first psychotic break in college, I started filming myself because I wanted the world to know what it's like to live with labels such as "psychotic," "schizophrenic" and "severely disabled." I filmed everything—from being catatonic to when I had ECT (electro-convulsive therapy). Finally a new generation of medications came on the market, and they actually began to work. My life became bearable, sometimes even enjoyable. I started to create again—drawing, carving and making woodcuts. If my family and doctor hadn't given me such intense support, I'd probably be dead by now. -- © Palo Alto Pictures [More]

Reviews for People Say I'm Crazy
People need to understand what [Cadigan is] going through and what nightmares face the numerous others who share his situation.
Cadigan's honest account of his treatment, psychotic episodes and daily life are more fascinating than any fictional treatment.
The power of this documentary is that it offers no romantic Hollywood-style bromides to ease the pain.
His is a valiant story, though it doesn't quite work as a nearly 90-minute documentary -- the Cadigans simply don't have enough material.
Allows viewers an intimate view of one person's story and proposes some unexpected ideas and conclusions about the 'mad artist' stereotype.
A bracing antidote to the usual Beautiful Mind-style Hollywoodization of mental illness.
Rarely has mental illness been depicted so subjectively and seemed so immediate: John's daily struggle to determine what's real and what isn't becomes as palpable as it is poignant.
An extremely affecting look at mental illness from the point of view of the afflicted.
An affecting, inside-out portrait of the artist as a young schizophrenic.
