Personal Sergeant (1969)
In this melodramatic character portrait, a World War II military hero is victimized by his latent homosexuality. Set in 1952 upon a U.S. Army base in France, the trouble begins when he finds himself inexorably drawn to a handsome but naive young private, whom he appoints his personal clerk. As the sergeant's latent lustful feelings begin to heat up, he exerts more and more control over the private's life. The pain of his unholy craving drives the confused sergeant to drink and one night, after getting terribly drunk, he crumbles and kisses the poor private full on the lips. Unable to bear the truth of his sexual nature, the sergeant staggers out to enact the story's tragic finale, one that strongly reflects the attitudes of 1968 mainstream society towards homosexuality. … More
