Holmes stars as April Burns, the black sheep of her family who has left suburbia for a Lower East Side tenement. To reconnect with her mother, Joy (Patricia Clarkson), and father, Jim (Oliver Platt), she invites them and her wisecracking brother (John Gallagher Jr.) and perfect sister (Alison Pill) for Thanksgiving dinner at her apartment, and against their better judgment, the Burnses pile up in the family station wagon, pick up Grandma (Alice Drummond), and head to the big city from the safe confines of their stereotypical suburban home. But Joy is seriously ill, complicating the road trip; meanwhile, April's oven is broken, sending her off to her bizarre and wacky neighbors to try to borrow their kitchen. Her interaction with Wayne (Sean Hayes) is a riot. Holmes is a revelation as April, showing marvelous range and depth as the outcast daughter who still strives for her mother's affection. Derek Luke is excellent as April's caring boyfriend, who understands how important this Thanksgiving dinner is to her. Platt is solid as the father, with just the right amount of vulnerability, but Clarkson nearly steals the movie; she takes over the screen in every scene she's in. Hedges's directorial debut, following screenplays for WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE, ABOUT A BOY, and A MAP OF THE WORLD, is well-paced and fun to watch. The soundtrack features music by Stephin Merritt with the 6ths and Magnetic Fields. [More]

A modestly scaled film on every level (it's only 81 minutes long), but Hedges and company manage to ring true on almost all the material's sweet and sour notes.

Smart, witty and touching in its examination of the way family ties can get stretched to their limits without severing the connection that makes people a family.

Hedges peppers it with enough wonderful moments that you can't help warming up to it.

A Murphy's-Law Thanksgiving comedy in which both the meal and the movie have a hard time coming together.

The movie is brimming with life. The story is moving to the point where it's hard not to shed a tear.

Pieces Of April is no good and no amount of Sundance catfights for its distribution rights will convince me otherwise

Economically paced and emotionally satisfying, Pieces of April is a good example of what small independent movies can do.

Hedges has crafted a warmhearted holiday film that stands as a small classic in its bittersweet illustration of the unbreakable bond of family.

The moment I realized the movie was working for me was when I realized that I was rooting for it to work, just as I was rooting for young April… a feel-good parable about taking steps in the right direction.

We’re left feeling those quirky, confused, often unbearably loaded feelings we often get around our families, and the power of the most important one: unconditional love.

Pieces of April looks like it is charming most of those who see it, but I was irritated by its artifice.

This is a gem of a film and goes to show that if you have a good story, you don't have to have millions of dollars to tell it.
