Critics Consensus: Pineapple Express is Tasty
Plus, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 is a nice, comfy fit.
This week at the movies, we've got friends bonding over THC (Pineapple Express, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco) and a pair of pants (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, starring America Ferrera and Amber Tamblyn). What do the critics have to say?
Best known for his cinematic tone pomes, David Gordon Green may not have seemed an obvious choice to helm a Judd Apatow-produced stoner flick. But critics say he's turned in a solid buddy/action comedy with Pineapple Express. Seth Rogen and James Franco star as a pair of stoners who, after imbibing a particularly potent strain of marijuana called "pineapple express," find themselves on the run from crooked cops and drug dealers. The pundits say Pineapple Express is a scattershot affair, but it hits more than it misses, and features an inspired, wacky performance from Franco. At 67 percent on the Tomatometer, this Pineapple is pretty tasty.

Only one of these guys has joined The Brotherhood of the Traveling Pants.
Cynics beware: critics say even chick-flick haters may be drawn into the breezy girl-power vibe of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. This second installment finds the Sisterhood (which comprises Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera, Blake Lively, and Alexis Bledel) going their separate ways, but maintaining close contact and navigating the rough waters of the early college years. While most pundits say this sequel isn't as inspired as its predecessor (which stands at 76 percent on the Tomatometer), it gets by on the easy charm of its ensemble cast, and contains some sharp life lessons to boot. At 66 percent on the Tomatometer, Pants is a decent fit.

Will this be the film that finally draws the fanboys away from The Dark Knight?

Kind of a Big Deal writes: on Aug 06 2008 05:25 PM In reply to this comment (#1958442) .... The Mummy 3, rated at an alarming 9% on the tomatometer, only lost to The Dark Knight by 2 million. Now, coming to TDK's 4th week on the screen, we have a well-made movie with a relatively high rating coming out. How can there be any doubt that TDK will lose it's #1 spot? Furthermore, why the **** would the sisterhood of the traveling sluts be the movie, between these two, to "finally draw the fanboys away from The Dark Knight?" Pretty sure TDK fanboys aren't going to be all that excited about the sisterhood... That's more of a Mamma Mia fangirl thing. (Reply to this) |

the train writes: on Aug 06 2008 09:22 PM saw PE earlier today, i thought it was great. franco is fantastic as the drug dealer dude. it's pretty much what you would expect from seth rogen--lots of homoeroticism. otherwise it's merely a well-executed genre film with some really terrific moments and some fun characters--it gives you what you would expect, with a few curves--not mind-blowing, but not pointlessly derivative, either. plus it's a lot of fun. oh--and no jonah hill. yay! TombstoneLawDog writes: on Aug 07 2008 07:06 AM Much as I hate to say it, I'm pretty sure Pine' will beat TDK simply on novelty and buzz. It doesn't really bother me, because TDK will have made at least four times whatever PE's final gross ends up being, by the end of this weekend. H#ll, maybe it's even a good movie...
