After Super High Me, Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, Smiley Face, and Strange Wilderness, today's release of Pineapple Express marks the fifth notable stoner movie of 2008. Are we in the midst of a genre golden age? Pineapple co-star/writer Seth Rogen insists this is less a stoner movie and more a movie with a lot of smoking (and shooting) in it, which got our wheels clicking: what are the most interesting portrayals of marijuana users out there, and how many of them are in movies actually classified as a stoner movie? Read on to check out Rotten Tomatoes' findings, and check out the Top 10 Stoner Movies over at our sister site, IGN Movies.

15. Sam, Dewey Cox's drummer
As seen in: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007)

Zen moment: "It makes sex even better!"

Smart weed noobs know it's best to have an experienced user around during a first smoke sesh, and one would be hard-pressed to find a better trip guide than Sam, Dewey Cox's loyal drummer. In one of Walk Hard's many running jokes, Sam is frequently caught in flagrante with groupies, half-heartedly resisting Dewey before sharing some drugs. As played by Tim Meadows, Sam lays out the pleasures of marijuana, coke, and ecstasy straight up, and, best of all, never backs off when the rules are broken: "You never paid for the drugs. Not even once!"

14. Floyd, the roommate
As seen in: True Romance (1993)

Zen moment: "You guys wanna smoke a bowl or, uhh..."

He's hardly in the movie, but for more than a few fans of 1993's True Romance, Brad Pitt's perpetually stoned Floyd steals the show -- no mean feat for a guy who never even gets off the couch, doesn't do much besides smoke out of a bong made out of an empty container of honey, and has to go up against similarly terrific (and similarly brief) performances from Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, Bronson Pinchot, James Gandolfini, and Michael Rapaport. It was no accident, though -- Quentin Tarantino's script came soaked in blood, and Tony Scott's direction added a layer of visual brilliance, but Floyd? Floyd gave us a few minutes of blissed-out humor between the gunshots.

How about any or all characters from "Dazed and Confused?"

Grandma's Boy had no memorable characters really. Although Peter Dante's character was pretty funny. I'd say Jay and Silent Bob #1 and then Smokey #2.

Cheech and Chong are the best stoners ever in cinema, especially since we have a handful to sit through as opposed to these cameos that made it onto the list.
The Dude is a better character, not a better stoner.

Why did Wayne's World and Bill & Ted make the list. Aren't the Bill & Ted movies rated PG?! If you're going to make a stoner movie you must at least qualify by showing a few guys get stoned on camera. Can't wait to see Pineapple Express.

"I believe him, man. I don't know why, but I do." I love that line.
As for Wayne's World (1&2) even siskel and ebert got a contact high from both these flicks. It's fun watching their reviews ... http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/ebertandroeper/index2.html?sec=6&subsec=meyers

Pinapple Express was a good addition to the stoner genre. It was fun and both Seth Rogan and James Franco were believable stoners. Honestly though, putting Bill, Ted, Garth and Wayne is just cheating or wishful thinking. The hookah smoking catapiller from any of the dozen Alice in Wonderland movies would have been a better referance.

All I know is that if they make a.. acid / lsd / just plain trippy movie.. Natural born killers and Fear and loathing in Las Vegas are run away number 1's and 2's

I'm saddened by this list.

I like that Floyd is there though. I guess he was the inspiration for "Pineapple Express." Apatow saw the movie, and thought "What if a film had a Floyd as the main actor, and had pot peddlers as violent as the drug dealers from True Romance?"

I think a Stoner should be someone who we know smokes pot, and isn't someone who just does every drug possible, like Dewey Cox.

And, yah, the guys from Dazed and Confused need to be there.

This list sucks! Dazed & Confused is the #1 stoner movie.

I haven't seen P.E.,

but that seems to be the impetus for this list,

so it's odd that Franco's character isn't on the list. . .
