In this sequel to Joe Dante's PIRANHA, unsuspecting vacationers at tropical Club Elysium find that they are the main course for a school of deadly piranha fish, genetically engineered as weapons by the government. One of the scientists responsible for the carnage teams up with a diving instructor to destroy the killer fish, which can launch themselves out of the water to attack, having been crossed with flying fish. PIRANHA 2 was James Cameron's directorial debut. He was discovered by a group of producers who witnessed his genius for "directing" maggots on a prosthetic dismembered arm using electrical shocks while he was working in special effects and art direction for low-budget science fiction films. The producers were sufficiently impressed to offer him a job as director on PIRANHA 2, which was filmed on location in Jamaica. [More]

The special effects are awful (the piranhas are obviously hand puppets) and the script worse. Full Review |

The piranha attack scenes are handled with minimal grace, giving us plenty of nice, long looks at just how fake the props are. Full Review |

Idiotic premise has US government genetic engineering experiments creating a deadly form of grunions (hinted at being used in the Vietnam war). Full Review |

Geralmente, grandes cineastas dão indícios de sua genialidade mesmo em seus filmes de estréia, por pior que estes sejam. Não é o caso de James Cameron, que aparentemente reservou seus talentos para o filme seguinte.

A copy rather than a sequel, this has none of the intelligence, wit or tempo that graced the first swarm of hungry fish. Full Review |

As its director claims, this is the finest movie about flying piranha ever made, but otherwise only of interest to hardcore James Cameron completists. Full Review |
