By day, Sirocco disguises himself as foppish Count Amalfi so he can spy around the court of the evil Queen Carolina (Binnie Barnes). He also finds time to woo lovely Countess di Lopez (Mariella Lotti). By night, Amalfi dons his mask and prepares to lead the people of Capri to victory against the corrupt chief of police, Baron Scarpia (Rudolph Serato). "The King of Poverty Row," director Edgar G. Ulmer (DETOUR, BLUEBEARD) combines intrigue, suspense and last minute escapes with a neo-realist flavor popular in Italian film at the time: stark, expressionistic sequences of life in the streets (it was filmed on location in Naples) provide a nice contrast to the glamorous escapades. PIRATES OF CAPRI features plenty of well-staged sword fighting and a climactic duel. The soundtrack is by Nino Rota (THE GODFATHER, ROMEO & JULIET). [More]

  • In the tradition of Zorro and Batman, star Louis Hayward is Count Amalfi by day--debonair playboy and confidant to Queen Carolina (Binnie Barnes)--and the mysterious Captain Sirocco by night--heroic leader of rebellious pirates. Using his insider's position, Sirocco hopes for a triumphant revolution over the forces of tyranny, but only if he can keep his secret identity hidden. One of Edgar Ulmer's most lavishly produced features, this swashbuckling adventure is packed with action and intrigue, set to a sumptuous musical score by the incomparable Nino Rota. The fourth volume in the highly acclaimed collection of genre classics by low-budget auteur Edgar G. Ulmer, this deluxe collector's edition also features a never-before-seen, never-broadcast TV pilot for a "Swiss Family Robinson" series that Ulmer directed in full color in 1958.

Uneven but inventive movie about a Zorro-style hero, theater and the French Revolution.
