"Spidey 3" Wins Domestic Battle; "Pirates 3" Takes Global
by Scott Weinberg | July 03, 2007

Summary

The battle of the summer's biggest smash isn't decided just yet, but it looks like "Spider-Man 3" will have to be content with the biggest domestic release -- while "At World's End" takes the global prize. Back to Article

Yep. After all that, it ended up a draw (arguably).

I don't see how one movie earning a net gross higher than another can be considered a draw. Maybe you could argue by considering the costs of the films or the cost of promotion, but the fact is Pirates earned more money that Spidey.

But those leads never last in this day and age. :P

dissapointed
as a huge spiderman fan (including numbah 3), knowing that those dastardly

DISNEY Pirates took Marvel's prize. Still, it was never a fair fight considering

Spidey 3 OPENED ON A Friday and had a normal weekend run and Pirates

opened on a Thursday night that included the Memorial day weekend explosion

as well. I know it souds like sour grapes but it doesn't seem fair that a superior

movie was outdone by a movie that pulled out every trick in the book to

outduel its competition. Still, its just pisses me off that a film based on a crappy

disney ride has globally beaten out one of the greatest fictional characters of all

time. Hey, it still says something that Spiderman 3 ruled here at home by a

considerable, nearly 40 million, margin. In my opinion, its pretty sad the rest of

the world rather see a worse film based on amusment park ride than your

friendly neighborhood spiderman. You rule SPIDEY and I can't wait for your next

exciting adventure.

I'm hoping "Transformers" can win the prize.

"Transformers" had so much marketing for it happening here in Australia - there were tv ads months ago, whereas I haven't even seen one for "Harry Potter" which comes out next week.

I have a feeling "Transformers" will surprise a lot of people, even if the plot is nothing that'll blow your mind - the special FX and audio make this an event movie of the likes we haven't seen since Jurassic Park!!! That being said... it is somewhat of a cliche guys movie inbetween all the robot fighting, but given the plots of "Pirates" and "Spiderman" this movie takes the prize of having the best story in my opinion.

People, the fight is not over yet...TRANSFORMERS have a really good chance at winning domestic, and do really well global as well. SM3 and Pirates 3 sucked anyway!! I just saw transformers today, and it is by far the best movie of the summer season and one of the most fun and entertaining films i have ever seen.

I dont think harry potter or transformers will beat spiderman or pirates. holidays or none, a lot of people dont even know harry potter is coming out.

But on topic, spiderman 3 earning that much makes me sick... as well as pirates 3, ugh.

Yeah, it's weird that their hasn't been a bigger Potter media blitz. I figured it was just here in the UK because everyone here has had the release date circled on their calender for 9 months now, but my folks said they haven't seen many ads for it either. The saving grace for it though is that theirs probably an army of sub-13 year olds who know the exact minute it comes out.

What on EARTH are you guys talking about? Transformers will not make HALF as much money as any of the three major blockbusters, let alone break that record. Spider-Man has a lot more universal appeal, for one thing. Men will come to see the action, women will come for character, kids will come for action, teenagers will come for either one, depending on their tastes. Pirates is sort of the same, except substitute 'character' for 'stars'. But Transformers? Unless there is an obscene amount of Shia LaBeouf fans out there that I'm unaware of, there are no real stars in this movie. Indeed, the only other really famous name here is Michael Bay, and that's more of a reason to avoid it, if anything. Also, with more Reviews coming in, Transformers has slipped into Rotten territory. Yes I know that hasn't stopped Pirates and Shrek from raking in tons of money, but Transformers just isn't as much of a must-see as those two. Pirates and Shrek are both add-ons to stories most of the world is familiar with by now, but Transformers is this new story that not a lot of people are familiar with.

And also, there's a much smaller demographic. This is for young children who love robots fighting, a small group of teenagers who like it as well, and then the older fans who are already fans. If you're not already a fan of this series, you probably won't be going to see it.

So yeah, in conclusion, there's no way this is stealing either record. $900+ million is an absolutely enormous number, and this movie would have to open to about $130 million at least to even have a chance at following through into that territory. Plus, let's not forget Harry Potter, which a lot more people are fans of. It's going to prove to be steep competition for this movie, and it will probably be the movie that more people will see.

Yeah, it does sound like sour grapes....
You're right, I guess. It was never a fair fight considering Spider Man 3 was released THREE WEEKS eariler and has been in the market three weeks longer. I mean, if you really want to even the tables.

Also, Spider Man 3 didn't have major competition when it opened when POTC had SM3 and Shrek the Third to deal with.

As for the Thursday night deal....it opened four hours earlier than SM3. And with a running time that's more than a half hour longer, POTC can't fit NEARLY as many shows in a day that SM3 can. It's not that big of a handicap for you "numbah 3" fan.

Spider Man = Greatest fictional characters of all time. Wow. Well we certainly know that no one here is biased...

Spider Man did win at home. In a country that only accounts for a fraction of the world. SM3 must have lost to POTC in MANY other markets for it to lose the worldwide battle. And again, Spider Man 3 had a 3 week jump on POTC and still lost.

Find it hard to believe or not, but the truth is that more people wanted to see POTC than SM3. But, hell, I guess that's just crazy talk....

The disadvantage that SPIDERMAN franchise has is being considered too American. Most of the other global smashes do not feature a predominantly American story, if you all really look closer.

Having said that, I still like SPIDERMAN 3 as a movie despite its obvious inferiority to its two superior predecessorss. And SM3 is still the highest grossing installment of its trilogy despite losing the world-wide box office crown.

er...no i think that's you tyler - if you're just going to make comments liket that that aren't even off-topic then just
anyway...yeah it's understandable that more people would want to see spidey really considering the quality of the previous two movies and him being one of the most popular superheroes ever. pirates though...what the? The first one was great even if it wasn't one of the best films of all time, the seconds one was ok (in my opinion) but the third one had virtually no redeeming qualities bar that fantastic whirlpool finale that saved the whole mess - i don't understand why people are going to see it again, why it's deemed by many as the best of the trilogy and even more scary, it breaking world records.

Anyone who thinks worlds end is as good as the curse of the black pearl should be marooned on that island (but without the rum).
Just my opinion anyway...go ahead pirate fans....burn me! lol
