I know that Platoon is being acclaimed for its realism, and I expect to be chastened for being a woman finding fault with a war film. But I've probably seen as much combat as most of the men saying, 'This is how war is.'
No, she's saying that she doesn't think that it is as realistic as people say it is, and also saying that, being a woman, men who haven't seen anymore war than she has will attack her.
Apocalypse Now is more a war movie than Platoon? Apocalypse Now is TOTALLY devoid of any emotion for its characters & a poor depiction of the atrocities of war. It was easily outdone by Hamburger Hill, Platoon & Saving Private Ryan
"Probably.... most of" If you're going to give a negative review for one of the best war movies ever made at least make sure you're certain about your reasons. Obviously the characters and story are hammed up and cartoonish, but this serves to make the subtext not only bearable but extremely entertaining to watch. This is why I rate the movie higher than The Thin Red Line, or similar movies that get so hung up on the moral struggle they forget there's an audience
The point of being a movie critic isn't to judge how realistic a movie is. What does it matter if the movie is realistic or not if you don't like it to begin with? The Deer Hunter is much less realistic than Platoon is, but it is just as (if not more) emotionally shattering. Movie critics should focus more on how the story affects them, and proclaim the movie's worth based on said observations, instead of covering the real reasons why they disliked the movie with comments on sexist paranoia.
