Two modern American teenagers are sucked into their television set and end up living in a black-and-white fifties sitcom. Bewildered by their new world's naivete and innocence, they slowly start to add color and spice to the town's life. Eventually, however, they begin to question their influence, wondering if their advanced 90's attitudes are really that much better than those of the innocent past. Sterling effects and stand-out performances make this commentary on modern life a poignant, entertaining effort. [More]

Reviews for Pleasantville
The acting in this film -- particularly Maguire, Allen and Daniels (whom I don't generally find very appealing) -- is terrific, but the show belongs to Gary Ross.
The movie has less biting originality than The Truman Show, but it proves that director Ross retains screenwriter Ross's flair for exploring real-life issues through divertingly far-fetched plots.
Funny for about half an hour, Pleasantville thereafter becomes an increasingly lugubrious, ultimately exasperating mix of technological wonder and ideological idiocy.
The most stunning thing about Pleasantville is the film's look, which rivals that of the year's other two most visually-impressive productions, Dark City and What Dreams May Come.
this smart, funny, visually dazzling film is the kind of moviegoing experience you're unlikely to forget.
Much of the interest here is in watching how the black-and-white scenes (filmed on color stock) begin to flower.
A pretty nice place to visit for a while. But to be honest, a two-hour trip there seems like too much of a good thing.
Enjoyable but a bit more successful in concept than realized execution.
