When a scientist clones a Pokemon named Mew, the resulting clone, Mewtwo, begins cloning Pokemons as well. Enter Ash Ketcham, who travels to the evil island with a group of friends to battle the clones and attempt to restore normalcy to the planet. A definite plus is that the film ends on a moral note, with the realization that fighting is wrong and pointless. [More]

Reviews for Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back
Kids will come away with the moral of the story: Trust your heart. Adults will just be happy to come away.
It would be nice to think that 'the kids' would take on board the heavy-handed moral messages, but more likely they’ll be looking out for new Pokémon to collect, therefore fulfilling Nintendo’s merchandising dream.
A lot has been written about the admirable lessons that Pokemon teaches children about responsibility, teamwork and obedience. But some unfortunate messages are being sent as well.
Unfortunately, dear grown-ups, no end to the Pokémon invasion seems imminent.
Pokemon has opened up another front in an unrelenting campaign to bankrupt parents around the world.
With intentionally stilted animation, uninspired music and lame jokes, Pokemon is basically an ultralong version of the phenomenon's own boring TV 'toon.
Spending 95 minutes with the slight antics of Pikachu, Ash and the gang may seem like an eternity.
The first half of the movie is filled with mystery, danger, and excitement. Unfortunately, heavy moral overtones start creeping in midway through the movie.
The movie's slim charms are such that they are unlikely to convert many adults to the cult.
The problem is not the violence, the standard abrasion static found in video games and juvenile TV. It is the lack of ideas, the paucity of story flow and dramatic imagination, the sterile, vacuum-packed cartooning 'directed' by Kunihiko Yuyama.
I’m about forty years too old to take this movie seriously. Or even understand it.
Even some children will eventually grow restless with the flat, unimaginative drawings and bland light-rock soundtrack
An incoherent hodgepodge of bad animation, cartoonish violence and heavy-handed pronouncements.
