Cannes 2009: Carrey and co. Present A Christmas Carol
Big, fat flakes of white snow suddenly began tumbling down in the roasting afternoon heat of the Cannes Film Festival yesterday. It wasn't global warming. It was just Cannes. Because here, you can do that. The festival is its own Field Of Dreams: if you pay for it, it will come. You want Christmas in May? You got it. You want Jim Carrey throwing snowballs after being brought in on a horse-drawn carriage? You got that too. Striding up a frosty red carpet between a set of pumping snow-machines, Carrey, Jenny McCarthy, Colin Firth and Robin Wright Penn arrived in style for this scene of meteorological madness to introduce the world's first look at Robert Zemeckis' upcoming 3D 'toon A Christmas Carol.

Box Office Guru Preview: Beowulf Set To Conquer Multiplexes
One animated film will bump another from the number one spot at the North American box office. But the new warrior Beowulf is no B movie but an A-list production from an Oscar-winning director offering action audiences something new. Also opening this weekend but likely to see more modest grosses are the family pic Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium and the romantic drama Love in the Time of Cholera.

Sony Planning Three More Motion Capture Flicks

"Terabithia" Starts Production Down Under

Harry Potter and the Box Office of Plenty
It's no big shock that the fourth entry in the "Harry Potter" series was, far and away, the number one draw at the weekend box office. But the flick turned out to have the fourth biggest box office weekend in the history of moviedom: Harry snagged over $101 million from nearly 3,900 North American screens ... in only three days!

"Monster House" to Get the 3-D Treatment in Digital Theaters
When the Robert Zemeckis-produced animated adventure "Monster House" hits movie screens next July, a handful of theaters will offer you the 3-D experience. Created with the stop-motion animation style used in last year's "Polar Express," "Monster House" is about "three kids who must battle a house determined to eat every trick-or-treater on Halloween."

Four Actors Tapped to Star in Zemeckis' "Beowulf"
Variety reports that a quartet of well-known performers have been invited to star in Robert Zemeckis' upcoming adaptation of "Beowulf." Ray Winstone ("King Arthur"), Anthony Hopkins ("Hannibal"), Brendan Gleeson ("28 Days Later"), and Robin Wright Penn ("Unbreakable") "would be committing to a process that is more like a regular movie than the voiceover work commonly done for 3-D animated films," as the technology-happy Mr. Zemeckis is planning to deliver a "Beowulf" presentation not unlike "The Polar Express."

James Cameron Still Deciding Between "Battle Angel" and a New "Project"
Writer/director/technology enthusiast James Cameron ("Aliens," "The Abyss") was planning to get started filming "Battle Angel" at the end of the year, but The Hollywood Reporter indicates that the ever-busy filmmaker might just have another project lined up first. No information has yet been divulged regarding "Project 880," other than the information that "Battle Angel" might be taking a bit longer to adapt than previously anticipated.

Seven Films Contend for Visual Effects Oscar
"The Incredibles" and "The Polar Express," two of this year's effects-heavy films, are out of contention for 2004's Oscar for visual effects, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Instead, the contest will be between seven films: "The Aviator," "Spider-Man 2," "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "The Day After Tomorrow," "I, Robot," and "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow."

Box Office: Ocean's Twelve 4th Highest Dec. Opener
If estimates hold, Ocean's Twelve's $40.9M opening will be fourth highest December opener of all time. Only the three Lord of the Ring films have better debuts. Return of the King holds the record with $72.6M, The Two Towers is second with $62M, and The Fellowship of the Ring is third with $47.2M. Ocean's Twelve's $40.9M opening is also better than its predecessor's $38M debut three years ago.

National Treasure Tops Box Office for Third Straight Week
There were no new wide releases last week, just some new films in limited release, the most high profile being Mike Nichols's "Closer" (Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Jude Law, and Clive Owen) and Zhang Yimou's "House of Flying Daggers" (Zhang Ziyi, Andy Law, and Takeshi Kaneshiro). Both did excellent business. "Closer," which has a fresh Tomatometer of 68%, grossed an estimated $7.7M in just 476 theaters.
