POPULAR, like many of its contemporary teen comedies on TV and in film, takes the social structure of high school seriously, and examines it satirically to reveal its absurdities and how it is ultimately little different from the world of adults. Sadly, the series was critically acclaimed but never managed to attract the viewers it needed to last more than two seasons. In episodes 9 through 15 of the second and final series, Brooke deals with her anorexia, while Nicole and Carmen both face the pain of alcoholic parents. Other major dramas that emerge include suicide and a fatal car accident, along with the less serious high school dramas of cheerleading, dances, and dating. Movie star Ann-Margret guest stars in a particularly funny episode. [More]

  • AVAILABLE AS PART OF A BOX SET ONLY. Disc Three. 9. Are You There, God, It's Me, Ann-Margret -- John and Lily are cast in a play where they have to appear nude. Brooke is hospitalized again for her problems with anorexia. Harrison meets a ghost in the hospital who knows a lot about him. Carmen attends a meeting for teenagers with alcoholic parents ... and sees Nicole there. 10. The Consequences Of Falling -- Harrison's hospital roommate, Clarence, dies. Harrison is deeply affected by this and attempts suicide, but Clarence visits him in the form of an angel to show him what the world would be like if he were never born. 11. Fire In The Hole -- Bobbi Glass has the students perform in a play she wrote about sexually transmitted diseases ... for still being a virgin, the gang gives Harrison a "Virgin Certificate," and he vainly goes on a mission to lose it. Sam tells George she wants to take their relationships to the next level but George mysteriously says he isn't ready yet. 12. The Shocking Possession Of Harrison John -- Harrison gets a bone marrow transplant donated by Nicole and starts acting like her, which prompts the gang to call a priest to perform an exorcism. Since Josh is dating Lily, Sugar Daddy feels left out and starts hanging out with George, who soon gets tired of him. Nicole finds out she was adopted. Disc Four: 13. Mary Charity, 14.
