So obviously, Uwe is from the Bizarro World. It all makes sense now! "These am best films me ever see! Therefore, me try real hard to make movies real BAD just like them!"

I can't even believe he'd comprehend the subtleties found within most of these films, but at least he's got some...SOME...taste.

Uwe Boll is one of the largest psychological experiments ever perpetuated. The question of whether people would see a movie that was intentionally designed to lose money has been answered. Unfortunately the mass of animated flesh known as Uwe Boll that was once controlled by a puppetmaster has gained self-awareness and is now unstoppable. Mankind is doomed.

Once again, people think that just because someone makes **** movies they can't appreciate good movies. While people like Christopher Nolan, Quenitin Tarantino, and Alfonso Cuaron make it look easy it is hard to make a really great movie. I have to admit though that I have never even heard of Blackwoods or In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Seige Tale.

Ewe Boll ROCKS! Seriously I have to admire the heck out of him. His end product may well be terrible but he has tenacity in spades and he gets things done. Screw all the film geeks in their parents basements whining about this guy. Do you know how bloody hard it is to get a movie made? Do you have any idea how complex and daunting the process of film making is? Sure he's not actually any good, but he's figured out a way to get it done. I haven't figured that out yet and he has, so really, how can I diss him? He's doing better than me. And he's doing better than most of you too.

40 years from now Tim Burton is going to make a biopic about him. Who c/w/should play Uwe Boll?

All this proves is that one can appreciate good art while being completely incapable of producing it yourself.

Its a social experiment he is conducting on us to see if we find it funny or something. Well Gilliam, I love your usual films, bot sure about this stunt though.

Yeah, these are kind of generic answers to the "what's your favorite movie" question and for most of them his rationale is "It looks like they had a hard time making it, so its good."

I like the guy, but I don't think this proves anything about having taste in movies. If anything, someone who shoots out standards like this without any odd or random entries is just trying to sound smarter than they are.

It's like if I said: the Godfather, Metropolis, Dr. Strangelove, or any other of the standard "best film ever" contenders. You'd think I was a pretentious tool. Anyone's real list of favorites will have some odd ones thrown in there. I like movies that have people with superpowers.

And breasts.

I'll agree that his continuing effort-- though its sad to think he actually WORKS on these things-- is a somewhat admirable trait. But when lined up with studpity and re ineptitude, that makes for a terrible combination. And I find it ironic that Boll called Bay's film the worst ever, when all of his films are exponentially more terrible (and lower rated).

And I agree with hamboner; it just sounded like he was trying to be smart and make people think "Oh, he likes great films." And notice how the only ouide movie reference was to "There Will Be Blood"-- the most recent film hailed as masterpiece (the nuances--or entire whole--of which he could probably never understand).

Oh, and where's the site for the petition? I would love to see what happens if a million people actually signed it (I doubt he would admit defeat). But I like how he hasn't made a wide announcement about the site--so basically no one will know about the petition.

3. One Flew Over tbe Cuckoo's Nest - Amazing Performance by Nicholson
4. The Searchers - Most Underrated Single Performance Ever
5. The Royal Tenenbaums - This film has an odd whimsical feel that I just love
6. The Graduate - Very funny, being in college it is very easy to still identify with its themes today
7. Duck Soup - Funniest movie ever
8. It's a Wonderful Life - Most Endearing film ever
9. Pinocchio - Best Animated Film Ever, Period.
10.Platoon - Best War Movie Ever
11.The Godfather Part II - Almost as good as the original
12.Empire Strikes Back - Better than the first, odd that the best movie in the series was one that Lucas did not direct himself
13.Jaws - Might be the easiest film to just sit down and watch at any time
14.E.T. - Only film that I will admit to crying during (in theaters)
15.Citizen Kane - Perfect, at times it is too perfect
16.Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory - Just for Wilder's amazing work
17.Fellowship of the Ring - still the best in the series
18.Red River - Another performance that Wayne deserved Oscar consideration for
19.Unforgiven - Great, dark Western
20.Terminator 2: Judgement Day - Pure Entertainment

Honorable Mentions: The Matrix, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters, Toy Story, Incredibles, Young Frankenstein, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dumb & Dumber, Rushmore, Alien, A Night at the Opera, I could go on and on

This guy's an idiot. "Once we Were Soldiers or Warriors or whatever." I wouldn't be surprised if he compiled this list from others' lists or from "supposed classics" lists without ever having seen any one of them. And if, in fact, he has seen them, it's a testament to how retarded he actually is...and an insult to these mostly masterful films ("Dances with Wolves" is severely overrated, as well as Kevin Costner).

Upon first hearing about the petition, I was eager to sign it, but upon further contemplation, I absolutely refuse. The trainwrecks this guy unleashes on the world are just too bad to miss. I want him to continue making movies until he dies. I want to see a feature-length making of documentary of one of his films, if only to see this man "crafting" the ****ty end product. He is such a unique, creepy man that I want him to endure for decades. He kind of reminds me of Michael Scott from "The Office," a complete moron who has absolutely no idea of how moronic he really is. Long live Uwe.

Boll doesn't seem to understand the difference between "favorite" and "best" films. Michael Jordan is almost universally considered to be the best basketball player ever but does that mean he is everyone's favorite? No. Some films I really like aren't even good such as Boondock Saints and Plan 9 from Outer Space. Btw, wouldn't it have been hilarious and extremely ironic if Boll listed Plan 9 as one of his favorites?

FWIW (not much) I don't think he was making any of it up. His point about which movies (or books) he likes now versus, say, fifteen years ago, suggests he was being honest. If he had been trying to impress, surely he would have included some Kurosawa or Bergman. Besides, he wasn't claiming these were the five greatest films, but that they were his five (current) favorites.

Also, the point he made about the difference between making Apocalypse Now and We Were Soldiers rings true. As someone who is involved in making films, when he watches one, he doesn't see only the result, but also imagines what it was like creating it. This makes me wonder what he thinks of Fitzcarraldo and/or Burden of Dreams.

Uwe Boll is able to keep making crappy movies because of a tax law in Germany that allows investors in German films to write all their investments off as tax deductions. i.e.,loans. So they can take out a loan and invest in a movie made in Germany and not have to pay back the loan. The only thing they have to pay are taxes on the profit of the movie......which for Boll is an all-time total of.......$0. oh ya, and if the movie doesnt turn a profit, the investor gets a write off. meaning they dont have to pay. technically hes using the system correctly...but hes abusing it...the tax deductions are in place to encourage investors to invest in German films and help the German film industry. But Boll keeps making terrible movies that never make any money. Hes just wasting money.
and personally, I think hes a douche.

is THE SEARCHERS a POS because the characters are racist or is it a POS even if they weren't? in one instance it means an opinion (probably varying from your own) deems a movie good or bad. john wayne's evan is an obsessed racist and it isn't glorified (like BIRTH OF A NATION where the klansmen are the heroes rescuing white women). his character is ugly and vile to the point he's willing to kill his own neice.

now i think MISSISSIPPI BURNING is a racist POS because it takes an actual event and then fictionalizes it making the black people who created and pushed the american civil rights movement to the side while white FBI agents pushed for change. that's the blatantly offensive. if they wanted to tell a story about southern racism they could have fictionalized all the events like IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT.

I'm under the impression that most people who say they wish that Boll was dead or that he'd stop making movies are just bandwagon haters who haven't even seen tha man's movies and just get a kick out of the one-liners they've read from critics' opinions.

If nothing else, I'm glad Boll is around because, from the many posts that I've read, he's a means for catharsis for many a keyboard hater and a means of entertainment for those of us who read their posts. I don't think the haters REALLY want Boll out of the movie business. If he were, who would they have left to criticize with such gusto and reckless abandon?

"Anyone else think that the photo above of Uwe Boll looks like Terry Gilliam?"

Now that you mention it, I do! I like/love all things Gilliam except for Tideland, which was beyond creepy and insane. And, like something Boll would do, Gilliam actually told the audience before watching the movie how good it is. . .

Let me get this strait. Uwe Boll was inspired by some of the greatest movies of all time, and the best he could come up with was Bloodrayne. Radiohead said their main influence was the Pixies, and Radiohead is one of the greatest bands of all time.

How does Uwe Boll do it!

And also for the Uwe Boll film, he should be played by either Eli Roth or Michael Bay, just to piss him off.

I'm sure most people on these forums are fairly intelligent, but who here has actually made a movie. Show of hands now (raises hand). If you haven't made one, how do you know if you can do any better? Talk is easy and, love him or hate him, he gets it done. And believe it or not, his movies do pretty well in Europe.

I know someone pretty who works with Boll and, according to him, Boll doesn't lose a minute of sleep over all the hate. He's doing what he loves and making lots of money at it. Wish I could say the same (I'm doing what I love, but the money part hasn't happened yet.)

Uwe Boll is a disgrace to the film industry. All you have to do is see his movies, then check their tomatometer on RT. Or you can watch Attack of the Show and watch Olivia Munn tell him live that many people think he's the worst ****ing director of all time.

I admire his courage, but signing the petition against him will earn me a free pack of gum. I dont like him anyways so it worked out well.

"We Were Warriors or Soldiers or whatever?"

Kills whatever credibility he might actually have gained.

Got to admit he has good taste. The only movie on that list I didn't care for was Dances With Wolves, but I know alot of people loved it.

I haven't seen any of his movies simply because they have been so roundly bashed, but yea... he does remind me of a modern day Ed Wood.

I've been watching Attack of the Show, and I don't get what all the big fuss is about Olivia Munn. She's terribly uninteresting. I've been wholly unimpressed so far - does she actually know her stuff or are all of her lines fed to her by their writers? I'm seriously curious to know. For now, she remains the Uwe Boll of geek show hostesses. Only not all that interesting.

I understand that's he good for getting things done - quick n cheaply. But why bother if the end is result is just a total piece of poo? That's like "I respect that guy for building a house so quickly and efficiently" and it's just a pile of bricks with some mortar thrown in. Yeah he's a good business man who is very efficient at filling dvd library shelves with ****. WHY BOTHER?

damn forum messed up my message...

seeing as it's so profound, I must relate my recent thought again:

"Uwe Boll = Ed Wood plus a budget"

I really like Uwe and can't wait for the interview. It's true that he has made some terrible films, but that doesn't make me dislike him as a person. He's funny and witty; there is a reason he's been able to secure financing so consistently. I hope he stays around just so I can enjoy articles like this.

@Jen: Thank you! She is a beautiful girl, but the personality... not so much. In reality it's just the fact that she is associated with video games that has placed her on the dream girl pedestal. I can just hear the nerds now, "She's not like other girls; she understands my love for video games and technology."

Sure she does...

Lots of loser directors name classics as their favorite films. Why? Because these are classics for a reason. Any idiot can enjoy them. Knowing how to /make/ them, however, learning techniques /from/ them is a different thing entirely.

I've seen a couple of Boll's movie, and on a range of Bad to Terrible, they are under atrocious. I'm surprised these are his favorites, why doesn't he just copy those movies, at least he would be called a rip off instead of a horrible director. You would think he was inspired to make movies after Howard the Duck, Waterworld, The Postman, and The Adventures of Pluto Nash (movies that cost way too much to make, and are very bad).

To quote the great Peter O'Toole as Pope Paul III on Showtime's magnificent "The Tudors": why doesn't someone JUST get rid of him?

Those "lots of people" need to watch more movies. Uwe Boll is nowhere near the worst director of all time. I think those who label him thus are revealing their own ignorance.

(For the record, I was looking forward to seeing "Postal" tomorrow.)

Oh you were planning on seeing Postal, were you also planning on guzzling down 20 gallons of gasoline afterwards to get the taste of Boll out.
